Heartbreaking loss for Hagerstown
May 3, 2004 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release
There is no loss tougher than the one the Hagerstown Suns endured on Monday night in Hickory. Leading 8-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, Hickory scored six runs, capped off by a three-run walk-off homer from outfielder Bobby Kingsbury to give Hickory the miraculous come from behind victory 9-8.
The Suns (8-13) dominated the game for the majority of the evening, behind a solid pitching performance from starter Christopher George and horrendous Hickory defense. Hickory had four costly errors in the ballgame, attributing to six unearned runs for the Suns. The Crawdads pitching as a whole issued nine walks throughout the ballgame, yet the Suns still managed to lose.
LHP Jesse English came in to relieve George in the bottom of the sixth and struck out five in 3 2/3 innings. English got into trouble in the bottom of the ninth, allowing a two run home run to Hickory third baseman Mike Collum. English struck out the next batter but then walked Sean Smith and gave up a single to the league batting leader Javier Guzman, forcing manager Mike Ramsey to go to the always-reliable Joe Bateman (1-1) in the bullpen. Bateman yielded a single setting the stage for Kingsbury's walk-off three-run shot. Coming into the game Bateman had only allowed four hits the entire season.
Nathan Schierholtz extended his streak of getting on base to 15 games with an RBI double. Jon Coutlangus added a two-run single during the Suns five-run fourth inning.
The Suns look to rebound from the heartbreaking loss during tomorrow's double-header at Hickory beginning at 12:00PM.
