Hawks Take 20th Tuesday

Jared Moe made 20 saves and the Waterloo Black Hawks scored two in the second period and two in the third for a 4-0 shutout of the Sioux City Musketeers at Young Arena Tuesday.

The win was the Hawks' 20th of the year and ended a three-game slide.

For Moe, it was the second time in as many home starts that he has blanked an opponent. The veteran goalie and the Hawks won by the same score on New Year's Eve versus the Madison Capitols.

Moe's best sequence came in the closing seconds of the middle period when he made a left-to-right save on Jordan Steinmetz, then got back to the opposite post to deny a wraparound. A video review confirmed the second save.

The Black Hawks had outshot the Musketeers 10-4 in a scoreless opening frame, despite being shorthanded two men for a full two minutes. The situation resulted from simultaneous hooking calls on Mason Palmer and Solag Bakich.

The Black Hawks broke through at 4:04 of the second. Coming up the middle of the ice, Vladislav Firstov's shot handcuffed goaltender Ben Kraws; the puck hit the heal of Kraws' glove, bouncing up over his left shoulder and into the net.

Ryan Drkulec added another score at 14:53. Xandler Lamppa patiently waited to feed Drkulec a pass as he zoomed into the zone. Drkulec's well-placed backhander found the top corner.

Leading scorer Matej Blumel doubled the lead in the third with his 20th and 21st goals of the season. The first came 1:23 out of the intermission and chased Kraws to the bench; Blumel used a defender as a screen and put a shot over Kraws' left shoulder from the high slot.

At 8:10, he struck again against backup Jake Sibell, after making a gritty play to create the opportunity. Seconds after a successful penalty kill, Blumel tied up the puck behind the Sioux City net for several seconds as the Hawks changed behind him. When the puck came free, Emil Ohrvall swiped a clearing attempt, feeding Blumel, who steered the pass into an open side.

The Hawks return to the ice for a home-and-home Dupaco Cowbell Cup weekend versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints, beginning Friday on the road at Mystique Ice Center.
