Hawks Stay Hot at Home

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks picked up their fifth consecutive home win Saturday by edging the Youngstown Phantoms 4-3 at Young Arena.

The Hawks turned a rare four-on-three power play into a goal at 1:18. Matej Blumel setup a Hank Sorensen one-timer from the left wing circle, and Christian Stoever couldn't get enough of the shot to keep it out of the net. Waterloo killed four consecutive Youngstown power plays which followed during the period, but Craig Needham tied the game at even strength, tipping Nikolai Jensen's shot at 16:24.

Two goals in a 35-second span turned the second period in the Black Hawks' favor beginning at 2:03. Wyatt Schingoethe took a couple of whacks at a Jacob Bengtsson rebound to knock the puck across the goal line and bump Waterloo into the lead. Matej Blumel followed up in transition on the next shift, putting the puck by Stoever from the right circle, off a feed from Emil Ohrvall.

Mason Palmer added another at 12:37. Stoever made a successful pokecheck to knock the puck from Ohrvall. Palmer swatted at the loose puck to keep it away from an oncoming Phantom, and ended up batting it into an open goal before Stoever could reestablish himself in the crease.

That goal proved to be the winner due to a third period Youngstown rally. The comeback began with Connor MacEachern's power play conversion from close range at 2:02. The other Phantom goal came at the end of a passing sequence with an extra attacker on the ice. Matthew Barnaby scored into an open side, but just 5.6 seconds remained, leaving Youngstown without enough time to put another shot on goal.

Logan Stein stopped 29 shots for the win. Jonathan Mor entered in relief of Stoever after the last Waterloo goal, and Mor turned away all 15 shots he faced.

Waterloo's busy post-Christmas schedule continues on New Year's Eve with a matchup against the Madison Capitols beginning at 6:05 p.m. and sponsored by 97.7, KCRR The Cedar Valley's Classic Rock.
