Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - The Waterloo Black Hawks will welcome two new teammates on Wednesday with the anticipated arrival of forward Daniel Sambuco and goaltender Jakub Tichy via roster moves the organization revealed this morning.

Tichy is an 18-year-old who has been playing in Czechia for the HK Hradec Kralove U20 squad. He will become the third Czech player to appear for the Hawks since 2018/19, following Matej Blumel and Ondrej Psenicka across the Atlantic. Sambuco's trip to the Cedar Valley is much shorter. Also 18, he is originally from Pennsylvania but comes to Waterloo after starting the season with the Madison Capitols. The Hawks added him as the result of a trade also involving forward Conner Schneider.

By acquiring Tichy, Waterloo has three goaltenders on the active roster. It is a situation that became common in 2020/21 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now Waterloo will once again have the security provided by a third netminder.

"At one point earlier this season, we played seven of nine games with an emergency backup goaltender behind our starter," said General Manager Bryn Chyzyk. "Since that time, we've been on the lookout for the chance to bring a third goalie into the locker room, and we found a world-class addition in Tichy. I think he is looking forward to joining us and facing North American competition."

Regarding the 5-foot, 11-inch, 204-pound Sambuco, Chyzyk noted the forward's size and presence on the ice.

"We are excited to add Daniel to our group. He should add an element of grit up front and make us harder to play against as we push toward the playoffs during the next three months."

Sambuco has appeared in 28 games for Madison this season with four goals, four assists, and a +3 plus/minus differential. He also notched a goal last season while appearing in three games for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. Adding a pair of appearances as a Capitols affiliate in 2019/20, Sambuco has 35 USHL games to his credit. He is committed to Providence College.

Tichy stands at 6-feet, 2-inches. He had been one of the leading goaltenders in Czech junior hockey this season posting a .936 save percentage. Tichy told Czech hockey news website Hokej.cz that conversations with Blumel helped convince him to make the move to Waterloo.

The Black Hawks are on home ice this weekend, hosting the Fargo Force on Friday and Saturday. The games are part of A Weekend with the Black Hawks, sponsored by John Deere. Waterloo will wear jerseys inspired by the equipment manufacturer during both games before those sweaters are auctioned Saturday to benefit the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
