Hale Named Opening Day Starter

Ottawa Champions News Release

OTTAWA - Ottawa Champions manager Hal Lanier has announced that RHP Jake Hale will be the club's opening day starting pitcher. Hale will take to the mound against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles on Friday, May 18 at RCGT Park, with the first pitch being scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Hale is in his first season with the Champions, and also serves as the club's pitching coach. The 32-year-old is a veteran of independent baseball, having spent his last seven seasons on independent circuits. He suited up for Brockton and New Jersey of the Can-Am League in 2011 and 2012, respectively, appearing in 70 games over the two seasons.

Last season, the Athens, OH native was a catalyst on a very good Sugars Land Seekers staff. He had a team-best 11-6 record with a 3.24 ERA in 24 starts, helping the Seekers to the lowest ERA in the entire Atlantic League.

Hale was primarily used as a reliever coming out of The Ohio State University, but made the transition to starter in 2013 with the Atlantic League's Camden Riversharks. Excluding that initial 2013 season, the 6'7" hurler has had a winning record in each subsequent campaign, accumulating a 33-17 record in 70 starts between 2014 and 2017.

After the season opener, the Champions will face the Aigles twice more on Saturday, May 19 (7:05 p.m.) and Sunday, May 20 (1:30 p.m.). Ottawa will then welcome the New Jersey Jackals to RCGT Park, with that three-game set getting underway on Victoria Day (May 21, 1:30 p.m.).

Tickets for all Champions regular season home games can be purchased online at www.ottawachampions.com, or by calling 613-745-BALL (2255). Visit the RCGT Park box office during open hours to purchase in person.
