August 3, 2022 - California League (CalL)
San Jose Giants News Release

The San Jose Giants suffered their largest margin of defeat this season with a 20-5 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies on Tuesday evening at Chukchansi Park. In the opener of a six-game series, Fresno batted around in three separate innings - a six-run bottom of the second, a five-run third and a seven-run bottom of the sixth - on their way to the convincing victory. The 20 runs surrendered were the most allowed in a game by the Giants (56-41, 16-15 second half) since the 2011 season.

Victor Bericoto (2-for-3, HR, RBI), Aeverson Arteaga (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Jared Dupere (1-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) each homered for San Jose in defeat. The Giants were only out-hit by a 16-14 margin, but could not keep up with the Grizzlies onslaught that included five doubles and three triples.

Seth Lonsway started on the mound for San Jose and began his night with a 1-2-3 bottom of the first. Lonsway though would run into trouble in the second as Fresno sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning scoring six runs on five hits. Juan Guerrero led off with a line drive to right that skipped past a diving Bericoto and rolled to the wall. Guerrero raced into third on the play for a triple - the first of eight extra-base hits for the Grizzlies. Juan Brito was then hit by a pitch before an errant pick-off throw to first from Lonsway allowed Guerrero to score for a 1-0 Fresno lead. After Braxton Fulford struck out and AJ Lewis singled, Yorvis Torrealba produced an RBI double to make it 2-0. Lonsway was on the verge on getting out of the inning, but with the bases loaded and two outs, Benny Montgomery beat out a broken bat roller to third for an infield single as another run came home. Yanquiel Fernandez then stepped to the plate and delivered a big blow when he smashed a triple into the right center field gap that cleared the bases as the Grizzlies lead grew to 6-0 and Lonsway's night came to an end.

Fresno then scored five more times - all with two outs - in the bottom of the third to stretch their lead to 11-0. With Julio Rodriguez pitching for the Giants, a single, a walk and an HBP loaded the bases for the Grizzlies with two down. Rodriguez then issued a full-count walk to Adael Amador to force home the first run of the inning. Montgomery followed by striking out, but the pitch was in the dirt and bounced towards the backstop. The second run of the frame scored on the play and when catcher Adrian Sugastey threw wildly to first for an error, the third run also came home. Fernandez then picked-up his fourth and fifth RBI's of the contest with a two-run single to push the Fresno advantage to 11-0.

San Jose scored all of their runs in the middle innings with the bulk of the offense coming via the long ball. In the top of the fourth, Dupere lined a two-run homer down the right field line - his fourth round-tripper of the season - to get the Giants on the board. Consecutive one-out singles from Garrett Frechette and Bericoto before a walk to Grant McCray then loaded the bases. Arteaga was up next and he drove a fly ball to deep center that was caught in front of the wall. Frechette was able to score on the sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 11-3.

After Fresno scored once in the bottom of the fifth, San Jose hit a pair of solo homers in the top of the sixth. With one out, Bericoto launched a 421-foot blast to deep left center - his ninth homer of the year. Then with two down, Arteaga hit his 10th home run this season to pull the Giants within 12-5.

The Grizzlies though responded with another big inning as 12 batters came to the plate during a seven-run, five-hit bottom of the sixth. Facing Matt Mikulski out of the San Jose bullpen, back-to-back doubles from Guerrero and Brito started the inning to produce a run. After consecutive hit batters, Torrealba doubled home two more runs to make it 15-5. Following a walk and a strikeout of the next two hitters, Montgomery brought home two with a double for a 17-5 margin. Guerrero then greeted new pitcher Ben Madison with a two-RBI triple down the right field line to push the Fresno lead to 19-5.

The Grizzlies scored their 20th and final run of the evening in the bottom of the seventh on an Amador RBI single. The #1 through #4 hitters in the Fresno lineup - Amador, Montgomery, Fernandez and Guerrero - combined to record nine hits with 13 RBI's.
