Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WIS. - Jordan Gore's two-run blast gave the Cedar Rapids Kernels a brief lead Saturday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium before the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers surged back in front for a 6-2 victory. Keston Hiura and Ronnie Gideon produced back-to-back RBI hits during a critical seventh-inning rally by Wisconsin.

The Timber Rattlers (19-23, 45-65) notched an early 1-0 advantage in the second inning. Demi Orimoloye drew a two-out walk and took second base on a wild pitch. He stole third base, and an error on the play allowed him to score.

Gore pushed Cedar Rapids (18-24, 57-55) ahead, 2-1, within the top of the fifth inning. Joe Cronin received a walk earlier in the frame, and Gore came up with two outs and lifted his first Kernels round-tripper to right field.

Wisconsin quickly tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Devin Hairston and Dallas Carroll both collected singles to put runners at first and second base. Later in the inning, Hiura singled to drive in Hairston and even the score.

The seventh inning would be the deciding frame Saturday. Hank Morrison hit a leadoff double for the Kernels and advanced to third after a groundout, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the top half of the inning. Wisconsin broke the tie with an RBI single by Hiura, and Gideon followed with a two-run double to put the Timber Rattlers' lead at 5-2.

Carroll provided the final blast in the eighth, extending Wisconsin's edge to 6-2. Carroll crushed his first Timber Rattlers home run over the left-field wall for the team's fifth unanswered run.

Nattino Diplan (3-8) was almost perfect in a winning effort. He retired 12 of 13 batters faced and struck out five consecutive batters in one stretch while working the final four frames of Saturday's series opener.

Max Cordy (1-4) took the loss for Cedar Rapids. He allowed three runs - all in the seventh inning - during a two-inning outing. Two of the three runs were earned.

Game two of this four-game series is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Cedar Rapids southpaw Charlie Barnes (0-0, 0.00) will start against Wisconsin right-hander Josh Pennington (0-2, 4.02).
