Goldeyes Add Promising Left-Hander

March 21, 2019 - American Association (AA) - Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed left-handed pitcher Robby Sexton on Thursday.

Sexton pitched in the Arizona Diamondbacks' organization in 2018 where he was 1-3 with a 4.37 ERA in 45 relief appearances for the High-A California League's Visalia Rawhide. The Columbus, Ohio native worked 55.2 innings in which he struck out 57, walked 19, and allowed only four home runs. Sexton did not allow an earned run in 32 of his 45 appearances, and pitched more than 1.0 frame in 17 of them. Left-handed batters were just 15-for-72 (.208) against Sexton.

"I'm thrilled to add Robby to the roster," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "He's a strike-throwing left-hander that is hungry to compete."

Sexton was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 14th round in 2016 out of Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio). The 6-foot-1, 220-pound left-hander owns a lifetime 3.79 ERA over 78 appearances, 60 of them as a reliever. In 183.0 career innings pitched, Sexton- who will be 25 on Opening Night- has struck out 182 (23 percent of career batters faced) versus 51 walks (seven percent). After undergoing Tommy John Surgery as a junior in 2015, Sexton bounced back and posted a 3.15 ERA for the Wright State Raiders as a redshirt junior in 2016.

The Goldeyes now have 23 players under contract for the 2019 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 4th.
