Goldeyes Add Power Right-Handers Charleston, Beardsley
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitchers Jack Charleston and Tyler Beardsley on Wednesday.
Charleston pitched at two levels of the Chicago White Sox' organization in 2017, combining for a 3-2 record, 12 saves, and a 2.42 ERA in 34 relief appearances for the High-A Carolina League's Winston-Salem Dash and the Double-A Southern League's Birmingham Barons. The Jacksonville, Florida native struck out 36 while allowing just 39 hits and one home run in 52.0 total innings pitched. Charleston held right-handed batters to a .195 average (123 at bats), and did not allow an earned run in 27 of his 34 outings.
"I'm pleased to add both Tyler and Jack to our pitching staff," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "Both young right-handers have powerful arms. Jack is coming off a great year in the White Sox' organization that saw him reach the Double-A level in only his second full season. Jack has some versatility to his game and has experience closing. Tyler comes to our club from the Twins' organization, and has some good velocity and pitchability. I'm really excited to see both of them throw when camp begins."
Charleston was drafted by the White Sox in the 30th round in 2015 out of Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama. During his first three professional seasons, the 25-year-old right-hander owns a 3.17 ERA, 18 saves, and has given up only four home runs in 139.1 career innings. The 6-foot-5, 165-pound Charleston has worked more than 1.0 inning in 51 of his 82 career relief appearances, while handcuffing right-handed bats to a .237 average. Charleston was 10-1 with a 1.70 ERA in 100.2 innings for the Faulkner Eagles as a senior in 2015, and also played collegiately at Santa Fe College (Gainesville, Florida) and Flagler College (St. Augustine, Florida).
Beardsley shared time with two Minnesota Twins' farm clubs last year, combining for a 4-9 record and a 5.08 ERA in 17 starts and one relief appearance for the Low-A Midwest League's Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Twins' Rookie level Gulf Coast League affiliate. The Lancaster, California native struck out 40 and walked only 20 in 90.1 innings of work. Beardsley allowed three or fewer earned runs in 12 of his 17 starts, and allowed four or fewer earned runs in 14 of them. Additionally, the 24-year-old Beardsley issued two or fewer walks in 14 of 17 starts, and walked three batters or less in all of them.
The Twins drafted Beardsley in the 16th round in 2016 out of Sacramento State University (Sacramento, California). The 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander saved 11 games and posted a 1.71 ERA as a senior for the Hornets in 2016. Prior to Sacramento State, Beardsley pitched two seasons at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, California. In two years of professional baseball, Beardsley is 7-11 with one save and a 4.32 ERA in 30 games, 27 of them starts. Beardsley has averaged just 2.1 walks per nine innings as a professional, while holding the opposition to a .247 average with runners in scoring position. Beardsley has walked two batters or less in 22 of 27 career starts.
The Goldeyes now have 28 players under contract for the 2018 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 5th.
