Gleyber Torres Paces 4-2 Comeback Win over N.H.
BOX SCORE (5/16) MANCHESTER, NH - Gleyber Torres' final two plate appearances of the night- including his tie-breaking, game-winning two-run home run in the top of the 8th inning- helped set the pace for four unanswered runs the Trenton Thunder's 4-2 comeback win Tuesday night over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
On the seventh pitch of his at-bat with no out and a runner at first base in the top of the 8th inning of a 2-2 game, Torres cracked his third home run of the season to left-centerfield in what was the decisive blow before 2,807 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
The 6th inning began with a walk to Jorge Saez and a double by Thairo Estrada off Fisher Cats starting pitcher Sean Reid-Foley. After Torres drew a nine-pitch walk in the 6th inning with your Thunder trailing 2-0, the New Hampshrie turned to the bullpen. Jake Cave hit a sacrifice fly and Miguel Andujar followed with a game-tying single to bring your Thunder back to even-footing.
The other half of the story Tuesday night was your Thunder's pitching. Starting pitcher Yefry Ramirez went a season-high 7.0 innings on 94 pitches and continued the hot start to his Double-A career. In 7 starts to begin the season, Ramirez is 5-0 with a 3.23 ERA after collecting the win Tuesday night. After allowing two runs on two hits in the outing, Ramirez is now 3-0 vs. New Hampshire this season with 10 hits over 19.2 IP and 2R/2ER (0.92 ERA) with 15 strikeouts.
Your Thunder got scoreless innings out of the bullpen from Travis Hissong in the 8th and Cale Coshow in the 9th to secure the win. The bases had gotten loaded against Hissong with two outs when Ryan McBroom bounced a groundball back up through the middle. Out of nowhere, Hissong blindly stuck his mitt out behind his back as he reached to the ground to spear the baseball and he calmly threw to first base to end New Hampshire's threat.
Then in the 9th, Coshow allowed a two-out single before inducing a game-ending broken-bat groundout to shortstop for his Eastern League-leading 9th save of the season.
Your Thunder and Fisher Cats return to action Wednesday night with a 6:35 p.m. scheduled first pitch. RHP Domingo German (1-4, 3.00) gets the ball for your Thunder against RHP Conner Greene (1-2, 3.27) as Trenton goes for a second straight win to begin the series. Pregame coverage with Adam Giardino begins at 6:20 p.m. on 920 AM WNJE and online at www.trentonthunder.com/broadcast.
