Jackson Generals News Release
Montgomery, Ala. - The Generals' roll continued against the Biscuits on Sunday night, as Jackson won its fifth in a row 6-2 at Riverwalk Stadium. Leon Landry turned the game around with a two-run blast in the sixth inning, putting the Generals in the driver's seat for good. Jackson took the final five games of the series to extend its lead to 7.5 games with 20 left to play in the First Half.
Jackson (32-18) trailed 2-1 heading into the sixth before rallying to take the lead. Montgomery's Ryne Stanek (1-6, 4.97) had cruised through the first five innings before the Generals got to him. Benji Gonzalez led off with a double to right field to put a man in scoring position. Two batters later, Leon Landry smashed a two-run shot down the right-field line to put the Generals in front 3-2. The homer was Landry's third of the year and second of the series.
The Generals scored three more in the seventh to put the game away. After loading the bases with nobody out, Guillermo Heredia ripped a two-run double down the left-field line. After Gonzalez grounded out, Tyler O'Neill drove in a run with an opposite field single to make it 6-2 before Heredia was thrown out at the plate. The outfielder has driven in a run in seven-straight games.
Ryan Yarbrough (6-1, 2.38) allowed just two runs (one earned) over six innings to pick up his sixth-straight victory and his fifth quality start of the season. The lefty struck six while walking only two.
A trio of relievers combined to keep Montgomery off the board in the final three innings. Ryan Horstman got two outs in the seventh before giving way to Edwin Diaz, who was appearing in his second game in as many days. After issuing a walk to load the bases, Diaz induced an inning-ending groundout.
Matt Anderson pitched a pair of scoreless frames to secure the victory. The right-hander struck out the final man he faced in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Generals struck first with a run in the third inning. Marcus Littlewood led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Ryne Stanek wild pitch. Montgomery (24-25) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Tommy Coyle led off with a single and moved to second on an Ian Miller error before coming home on an RBI single by Willy Adames.
The Biscuits briefly took the lead thanks to a run in the fifth. Jake Hager singled and Adames doubled to put two in scoring position with one out. Casey Gillaspie pushed a run across with a groundout to make it 2-1 Montgomery. Jackson jumped in front in the next half-inning on Landry's homer.
All nine Generals had a hit in the contest, with D.J. Peterson stretching his hit streak to 10 games. Benji Gonzalez, Marcus Littlewood and Ian Miller each had multiple knocks as part of Jackson's 12-hit effort.
After dropping the opener to Montgomery in ten innings, Jackson won the next five by a combined score of 35-13 against the second-place team in the division. This is the team's second five-game winning streak of the season, and they are now 14 games above .500 and hold a 7.5 game lead in the division.
After a league-wide off day Monday for Memorial Day, the Generals continue their 11-game road trip with a visit to the Tennessee Smokies for five starting on Tuesday. Andrew Moore (0-0, 9.00) will make his second Double-A start in the first meeting between the division foes opposite Stephen Perakslis (0-1, 5.40).
