Gameday Preview: Storm Set to Open 2021-2022 Regular Season
Cranberry Township, PA. - The Tri-City Storm opens regular season play this afternoon against the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the team's opening game at the 2021 DICK'S Sporting Goods Fall Classic at the UMPC Lemieux Sports Complex outside of Pittsburgh in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:30pm CT.
Tri-City (0-0-0-0) completed preseason play with a 2-3-0-0 record. Last season, Tri-City captured the fifth Regular Season Western Conference Championship in organization history after posting a record of 30-18-3-1. Tri-City was eliminated by the Fargo Force in the Conference Semifinal round of the 2021 Clark Cup Playoffs. The Storm finished last season with the most goals scored by any Western Conference team (178). Tri-City allowed the second least number of goals in the West (137). Tri-City's power-play finished 2nd best in the conference last season with a conversion rate of 20.6%. The Storm also netted more power-play goals (46) than any Western Conference team. Tri-City's penalty kill led all USHL teams at 88.3%. Today's game is Tri-City's first matchup against an Eastern Conference opponent in five hundred and sixty-five days. The Storm's last game against a team from the USHL's Eastern Conference was a matchup with the Muskegon Lumberjacks on March 7th, 2020. The Storm defeated the Lumberjacks 4-3 at the Viaero Center. Following today's season-opening game against Dubuque, Tri-City will battle the Madison Capitols tomorrow for the team's final game at the USHL Fall Classic.
Dubuque (0-0-0-0) finished exhibition play with a 3-1-0-0 record. Last season, the Fighting Saints posted a regular season record of 24-23-4-1. Dubuque was eliminated by the Chicago Steel in the Conference Semifinal round of the 2021 Clark Cup Playoffs. The Fighting Saints' power-play finished the 2020-2021 season 4th best in the Eastern Conference and 4th best in the USHL (22.0%). Five of the top six power-plays in the league last season came from the Eastern Conference. The Fighting Saints' penalty kill finished the season second-to-last in the league last year (75.2%). Dubuque won the most recent game played against the Storm 2-1 in overtime at the Mystique Ice Center on November 15th, 2019. Dubuque's last loss to the Storm came on March 23rd, 2019, in a 4-2 home loss. Following today's cross-conference matchup against Tri-City, Dubuque returns to action tomorrow in a game against the Omaha Lancers. The Fighting Saints will face the Green Bay Gamblers on Saturday, October 9th in the team's Home Opener.
