Late Rally Falls Short In Game One Defeat, 2-1
BOX SCORE HIGHLIGHTS
Altoona starter Brandon Waddell kept the Thunder scoreless for the first six innings and the Curve held on to a 2-1 victory in Game One of the Eastern League Championship Series.
With the result, Altoona takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
A pitchers duel between Waddell and Dillon Tate developed through the first four innings before the Curve broke through in the top of the fifth. Three straight hits with two outs netted a run with Mitchell Tolman's single through the right side of the infield plating the game's first run.
Tate completed six innings in a strong bounce-back performance following his three-inning outing in Game One of the EDCS. Tate struck out three and allowed six total baserunners with four hits and two walks against him on 91 pitches.
Altoona added to the lead in the seventh inning when Elvis Escobar singled in Casey Hughston. Escobar's single against Jose Mesa Jr. loomed large as the Thunder mounted a comeback in the final two frames.
A leadoff single by pinch-hitter Billy Fleming started the Thunder offense in the eighth and Jeff Hendrix followed him with a single to right-center to put runners on first and second. Nick Solak dropped down a bunt to move both men into scoring position and Thairo Estrada plated a run when he beat out an infield single. With the Thunder trailing 2-1, Altoona went to Tanner Anderson out of their bullpen and he got Ryan McBroom to bounce into a fielders choice in which Hendrix was tagged out at home. Dante Bichette Jr. wasn't able to bring home the tying run when he grounded out to Wyatt Mathieson at third base.
In the ninth, Abiatal Avelino doubled with one out and moved to third on Rashad Crawford's groundout. However, Anderson was able to strike out Sharif Othman with a fastball and complete the 2-1 victory for the Curve.
Hendrix, Estrada and Crawford each had two hits to lead the Thunder offense. Eight runners were left on base including four across the first three innings.
