Game Day Preview: KGN vs PBO

January 27, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Kingston Frontenacs News Release

After a hugely successful past weekend with three consecutive victories, the Kingston Frontenacs (20-9-3-0) hit the ice against the Peterborough Petes (12-20-2-0), looking to extend a one-point East Division lead on idle Hamilton. It's an important game for coach Luca Caputi's team with a game-in-hand on the second-place Bulldogs being used tonight, with Kingston playing one fewer game. Kingston got to 20 wins last Sunday for the quickest time since 2015-16 when the club had played 31 games with identical 43-point totals.

The Black and Gold hold a 5-1-0-0 edge over Peterborough in six games, with Kingston wanting to get some revenge after a 6-5 loss to Peterborough in the club's last game on January 7 at Leon's Centre. The Fronts were shorthanded in that game, with coach Caputi and his squad playing with a small bench. Showing a great effort to keep in the fight after going down 2-0 before the five-minute mark, the Frontenacs held two leads before a two-goal third by Peterborough gave them their first win of the season over Kingston.

Emmett Sproule and Tucker Robertson are the catalysts in the Maroon and White's attack. The pair are both in the top-15 league scoring, and Sproule has 11 points in the six games versus Kingston with ten assists.

Kingston' Lucas Edmonds (4th), Jordan Frasca (17th), and Martin Chromiak (18th) all are in the top-20 as the goalies will need to be sharp. This season, Edmonds has been a Petes wrecker with four goals and 13 points in his six games versus the Petes. The overage assistant captain is joined by Frasca (11) and Chromiak (10), who also have double-digit point totals against the Petes.

Kingston Strength over Petes Weakness

Kingston has one of the most prolific offences in the OHL, with 134 team goals (third-Eastern Conference). The 4.19 goals-for per game is first in the Eastern Conference and second to only to the Soo Greyhounds (4.24) overall in the OHL. The Petes allow a league-high 4.59 team goals-against, with 156 times the Petes being scored upon in their 34 games. Kingston has allowed 115 for a 3.59 average against them.

Just the Wright Time

Captain Shane Wright is beginning to heat up after a roller-coaster of a month representing Canada at the World junior in Alberta. The projected first-overall selection at the 2022 NHL Draft has points in four straight games with five points (2G,3A) and a plus-two rating. In his last three games, the dynamic centre has been solid on the faceoff circle, winning 39 of 55 draws for an impressive 70.1% success rate. With possession being essential for the Frontenacs, the increased puck-drop wins have helped the Fronts use more energy on the offensive and not burn as much retrieving the puck before attacking.

Zayde Getting back his Wisdom

Philadelphia Flyers prospect Zayde Wisdom is showing the form that earned him a draft selection at the 2020 NHL draft. The bulking power-forward is still recovering from a shoulder injury and not quite at 100 percent but he has looked more solid in the last three games with multiple big hits and a three-game point streak (3A). He is playing on a line with Martin Chromiak and Shane Wright.
