Fronts Battle Hard But Fall to Generals on Sportsnet

Kingston Frontenacs News Release

It wasn't enough in the end, but Kingston Frontenacs played hard against a very good Oshawa team coming up short in a loss today on the road. Both teams displayed some high-level skill at times in an entertaining matchup sure to get even better over the next couple of seasons.

The Frontenacs travelled west on the 401 for the matinee matchup with the division-rival Generals for their fifth game versus each other this season. Coming in off a disappointing loss that saw Saginaw Spirit storm back in the third period and then winning the game in the last seconds last night, the Frontenacs were hoping to gain back some ground in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The road game marked the middle of a current three-game in a three-night stretch. For the second time this season, Kingston played to a national TV audience on Sportsnet losing the first in Hamilton on Dec 14th after getting an early two-goal lead in the that game.

Former Frontenac Brett Neumann has combined with the arrival of Philip Tomasino in Oshawa, (after a trade from Niagara), making the Generals the only team in the OHL with two 30 goal scorers. The 1990 Memorial Cup Championship was also celebrated before the game in honour of the Generals players most of which attended the ceremony including Eric Lindros.

Christian Propp was back in net after Ryan Dugas was in the crease for the last two games and did battle against Jordan Kooy in Oshawa's net. Kooy has been good since his trade from London to the Generals much like Propp for Kingston.

1st Period

Shane Wright extended his point and goal-streak to five with his 24th goal at 3:18 to give the early lead to the visitors. After a beautiful touch-pass by Martin Chromiak, between his legs, Wright was able to go in alone on Kooy and chipped a shot that found its way through the goalies' equipment.

The lead was short-lived as just over a minute later, Liam Whittaker was able to step into a slapper and wire a perfectly-placed shot that beat Propp over his left shoulder and ringing in off the bar. Whittaker's third was assisted by at 4:50 squaring it up 1-1 early.

The teams exchanged some good chances including a Chromiak breakaway and a reviewed non-goal that was proven correctly to have been a hit post by Oshawa. It was then 2-1 Generals at 10:19 after a nice passing play started off by former Frontenacs Brett Neumann. The offensively gifted-forward dished off to McLean in the corner who immediately fired a pass to a breaking Ennis who buried a one-timer past Propp for the Generals' first lead of the night. Oshawa went up by two at 15:30 after Tomasino made a nice pass to Ty Tullio for his 20th goal.

Second Period

Christian Propp had a middle-frame making some key saves at the start and end of the period. After the first four shots came in the opening minute while on a four-on-four, Propp kept it a two-goal game and Kingston had a couple of good chances by Zayde Wisdom and Martin Chromiak over the opening half of the middle frame. Shortly after Kingston failed to convert on their first powerplay, Dawson Baker scored his 15th goal on a wicked wrist shot that beat Kooy high over the right shoulder at 9:30 to make it 3-2. Assists went Maddox Callens and Jakob Brahaney drew helpers on the play with Brahaney's 22nd leading the team.

The second half of the period saw Oshawa begin to push back after the Frontenacs had been generating some good chances while mitigating high-scoring opportunities. The game also heated up after a Lucas Peric check on Neumann drawing the ire of the former Kingston forward. The two exchanged some words as Neumann came at him with everyone getting involved to an extent, save for the goaltenders. When all was said on done, Peric was off for kneeing with Neumann and Wisdom (who'd come in to help his teammate) receiving coincidental minors with Oshawa ending up with a powerplay.

Jordan Frasca was called for a penalty shortly after and the Generals took advantage of the two-man powerplay taking a 4-2 lead 15:30 on a goal by Oliver Suni. Suni, who had just returned from injury, banged home a rebound after Propp had made a great save off the original point-blank shot.

Propp made two potential highlight of the week saves in a Kingston penalty kill during the last two minutes of the period to keep the Frontenacs within two heading to the second intermission.

3rd Period

Oshawa took a 5-2 lead at 4:26 when Tullio buried a point-blank one-time shot off a feed by Tomasino for his second of the game. However, Wright made it 5-3, also scoring his second of the game and 25th goal just over a minute later at 5:48 when he roofed a shot past Kooy's glove-hand after getting fed in a dangerous scoring area by Chromiak.

Chromiak then buried a shot past Kooy at 7:54 making it 5-4 as Kingston continued to pressure the Generals. Chroamika's goal was his third point of the game. The Wright, Chromiak, Wisdom line has a combined 16 goals and 14 assists since being joined together in nine games. Chromiak now has 12 points in nine games since his arrival and is on now on a six-game point streak.

Oshawa was able to again jump back to a multi-goal lead at 8:58 after Tomasino finished off a nice backdoor pass by Tullio making it 6-4 and then Tullio set up Brett Harrison at 18:11 to end the games' scoring at 7-4. The Generals scoring prowess proved to be just too much as they were able to take advantage of their limited opportunities in good areas combined with some good shots.

Shane Wright leads all OHL rookies now with 42 points and a seven-point lead on Peterborough's Mason McTavish.

The Frontenacs next game is tomorrow night at the Leons Centre at 7 p.m. vs the Niagara IceDogs in a huge four-point game against one of the teams Kingston is tracking in the Eastern Conference.

Be a part of Hockey Day in the OHL on YourTV as the Kingston and Niagara conclude a full-day of continuous hockey on the station in the final game of a three-game broadcast. Tickets are available at the box office or at Ticketmaster.ca.
