Freedom Fall 5-3, Doubleheader Friday
August 18, 2011 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
The Freedom rallied for three runs in the ninth inning but fell short in a 5-3 loss to Evansville on Thursday night in Florence. Evansville took the three-game series with the victory.
Evansville jumped on top in the second inning. Phillip Britton doubled and Dan Killian singled to move him to third. Troy Frazier followed with a sac fly to left to give the Otters a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth Jose Hernandez hit a one-out double and scored on Killian's RBI double to make it 2-0. Hernandez hit a two-run shot in the fifth to increase the Otters lead to 4-0.
The Freedom threatened in the sixth, as John Malloy and Cole Miles reached on back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Junior Arrojo lined out and Juan Valdes hit into a double play as Otters starter Kyle Barry escaped the inning without allowing a run.
The Otters added a run on a sac fly by Alex Foltz in the seventh.
Barry shut the Freedom out on four hits for the first eight innings and entered the ninth looking for a complete game shutout. However, with two out in the ninth, Valdes doubled to the gap in left center. Chris Curley scored him with a bloop double and Drew Rundle followed with a two-run bomb to right to pull the Freedom within 5-3. It was his ninth homer of the season.
Eric Massingham came on in relief of Barry and got Jeff Dunbar to ground out to end the game for his 19th save. Freedom starter Anthony Bello (3-5) allowed four runs on five hits in five innings.
Barry (3-7) gave up three runs on seven hits in 8 2/3 innings. With the win, the Otters became the winningest franchise in Frontier League history with 689 victories as a member of the league.
Southern Illinois comes to town on Friday night to start a four-game series with a doubleheader. There will be two, seven inning games with game one starting at 5 p.m.
