Western New York Flash News Release
Buffalo, NY - The Western New York Flash of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) is excited to announce that the WNY Flash is bringing home US National Team Star and Rochester's very own Abby Wambach for Saturday's festivities. An appearance by Wambach is just one of the many treats in store for fans at the WPS Championship Weekend at Sahlen's Stadium, the highlight being the 2011 WPS Championship game between the WNY Flash and the Philadelphia Independence at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2011. Even though Wambach's magicJack FC club were eliminated in the WPS super semifinal by the Philadelphia Independence, the Rochester hero and World Cup star will be on hand to watch Philly's attempt to upset Marta, Alex Morgan and the No. 1 seed WNY Flash. Abby particpate in a pre-game autograph signing from 2:30-3:30 pm. Wambach spoke on July 20 at Sahlen's Stadium in front of a WPS record attendance, just three days after Team USA's scintillating run to the World Cup Final ended in a penalty shootout loss to the Japanese.
In addition to Wambach's appearance, fans can get up close and personal with the WPS Championship Trophy for photos. The #49 Team Sahlen race car will also be on display for photos and at halftime Fe Fe Dobson will be performing a mini-concert.
On the field, the Championship game pits the league MVP Veronica Boquete, US National Team players Amy Rodriguez, Nicole Barnhardt and Lori Lindsay as well as Coach of the Year Paul Riley against the Regular Season Champions for what is sure to be an exciting and competitive match as the two squads have battled for top-spot all season. Ironically, Boquete won MVP honors for the Flash last season in the W-League Championship match, as the Buffalo Flash were victorious over the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1. Following that victory, the Flash joined the WPS as an expansion team in September. Be sure to make the game prior to kickoff as the WNY Flash WPS Year End award winners Ashlyn Harris (US Coast Guard Goalkeeper of the Year), Whitney Engen (Defender of the Year) and Marta (WPS Golden Boot) receive their honors in front of the home crowd. Gates will open early on Saturday at 2 PM, and the game will be televised live on Fox Soccer Net with coverage beginning at 3:30 PM. All tickets will remain as regular season pricing for the Championship match. For more information or for tickets, please call 585-454-KICK (5425).
