Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars (47-49, 12-15) used a five-run fifth to spring past the West Michigan Whitecaps (48-49, 12-15), 8-5, on Thursday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.
The Cougars took the night's first lead on Jancarlos Cintron's two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning. The Whitecaps responded by cutting the lead in half in the third. A pair of two-out singles and a walk loaded the bases for Brock Deatherage. Deatherage collected an infield single to drive in the first run for West Michigan. In the top of the fourth, Dylan Rosa singled in a run to tie the game, 2-2. The Whitecaps took their first lead on Kody Clemens' two-run single with two outs in the fourth.
The Cougars broke out in the fifth. Luis Silverio and Ryan Dobson singled to start the frame. With one out, Ernie De La Trinidad reached on an error by shortstop Cam Warner, bringing home a run to make it 4-3. The next hitter, Tim Susnara, recorded an RBI double on a ball the centerfielder Brock Deatherage lost in the lights. With the game tied, 4-4, Eudy Ramos stepped to the plate and banged a homer over the left field fence to give the Cougars a 7-4 cushion.
West Michigan tallied in the eighth inning when Colby Bortles reached on an error by Cougar shortstop Ryan Dobson. The Cougars neutralized that run with their own score in the bottom of the eight on Luis Silverio's RBI single.
Lane Ratliff (1-1) earned the win for the Cougars, tossing three innings of one-run ball. That only run allowed was unearned. Starter Mack Lemiuex took no-decision in an outing that lasted 4.1 innings. The lefty allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Juan Torres retired both batters he faced. Breckin Willians (3) worked a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down the save.
Whitecaps starting pitcher Jesus Rodriguez (5-5) took the loss. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits over five innings. Felix Viloria tossed three innings, surrendering a run.
The Cougars and Whitecaps play the finale of the three-game set on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday night will be "Christmas in July Night" at Northwestern Medicine Field, including an appearance from Santa. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
