Greenville Drive News Release
Columbia, SC - A low-scoring affair in Monday's series opener between the Greenville Drive and Columbia Fireflies was decided late, as an eighth-inning run proved to be the difference for the Fireflies in a 3-2 victory.
The winning rally for the Fireflies (16-28, 52-62) started with a two-out single by Eudor Garcia. After Garcia moved to second on a Drive (21-23, 58-55) passed ball, Dash Winningham came through with the go-ahead single to center off Gerson Bautista (1-2).
Tyler Bashlor (3-1) recorded all six of his out via strikeout to get the win for Columbia in relief, and Jimmy Duff worked a perfect ninth to get the save.
Both starting pitchers gave their teams terrific efforts in no-decisions. For the Drive, Daniel Gonzalez struck out seven over six innings while allowing just two runs, and Chase Ingram gave up just one run in his six innings for the Fireflies.
Roldani Baldwin gave the Drive a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single that scored Austin Rei, who walked. Baldwin went 3-4 at the plate to lead the Greenville offense.
Gonzalez held the Fireflies off the board until the fifth, when he uncorked a wild pitch to let in the tying run. They took the lead in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by J.C. Rodriguez and Garcia.
The Drive quickly answered in the seventh to tie the game at two when Nick Lovullo singled home Rei, who also singled in the frame.
Game two of the three-game series begins at 7:05 PM on Tueday in Columbia. Left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus (0-1, 5.55) takes the hill for the Drive against Fireflies right-hander Gaby Almonte (2-4, 5.26).
