Finkelstein Named USHL Defenseman of the Week
Finkelstein Firing on all Cylinders
First Hawks Defenseman to Win Award
Waterloo, Iowa-One of the best individual offensive performances by a Waterloo Black Hawk this decade helped Ben Finkelstein earn the United States Hockey League's Defenseman of the Week award on Monday.
In just his third game for Waterloo, the 20-year-old recorded a goal and five assists Saturday versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. The Hawks prevailed 7-3, with Finkelstein having a hand in Waterloo's first four goals. He assisted on three first period scores, then hit the net with a shot of his own early in the second. The Boston College recruit set up two more tallies before the intermission.
It is the first time a Waterloo player has had six points in one game since Taylor Cammarata did it on October 28, 2012 during an 8-3 win versus the Youngstown Phantoms. Finkelstein's effort equaled Fargo Force forward Griffin Loughren's October three-goal, three-assist game for the most points by a USHL player on one night this season
Finkelstein notched another assist Sunday during a 3-2 overtime loss to the Sioux Falls Stampede. That contribution gives him nine points in 12 periods as a Black Hawk. Six Finkelstein points have been recorded in power play situations. In his four games with the team, Waterloo has gone 6-for-19 on the advantage.
The Black Hawks have now won five USHL Player of the Week awards. Ethan Johnson and Jackson Cates have each been recognized as Forward of the Week, while Jared Moe and Matej Tomek have previously been Goaltender of the Week.
Coming up Friday and Saturday, the Black Hawks host the USHL-leading Tri-City Storm. The back-to-back games are part of Waterloo's annual John Deere Weekend.
Discounted tickets are available for Deere employees and their families.
The Hawks will also wear John Deere jerseys commemorating 100 years of the company's tractors made in the Cedar Valley. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
