Fernandez Dazzles in One-Hit Performance

Jupiter, FL - Junior Fernandez got the start tonight in his home ballpark and showed why he is one of the top prospects in the St. Louis Cardinals system. He tossed 6.1 perfect innings against the Tampa Yankees before giving up a single to Nick Solak in the seventh inning. The twenty-year-old, right-handed pitcher went out and started dealing early and got help in the field by Darren Seferina and Randy Arozarena.

Fernandez ended up going eight innings, giving up only the one hit in the top of the seventh inning. Fernandez ended up striking out six batters in his performance and walking one. He found command early and let his defense be the glue behind him.

The Cardinals also gave Fernandez great run support throughout the night starting early in the first inning. Randy Arozarena started things off with a bunt single to the left of the pitcher's mound and reached third on a pickoff error by the Yankees pitcher, Domingo Acevedo. Darren Seferina knocked in Arozarena and made it 1-0 after the first inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Cardinals bats broke out giving Fernandez the cushion that he needed to be able to just settle down and cruise. Arozarena and Casey Turgeon hit one out singles and Seferina in Arozarena to make it 2-0. Chris Chinea hit a single through the hole at short and third to make it 3-0. Danny Diekroeger hit a ball that rolled under the second baseman's glove that allowed Seferina and Chinea to score on the error. The Cardinals led 5-0 through three innings.

The top of the fourth, Darren Seferina showed off his glove as he made two diving plays to keep the perfect game intact. Randy Arozarena flashed the leather as well in centerfield in the sixth inning as he made a leaping catch that caused him to tumble head over heels.

The Cardinals added two more runs in the seventh as Thomas Spitz hit a single to start the inning and Casey Turgeon drew a one out walk. Seferina rocketed a double down the left field line allowing Spitz to score. Chinea plated Turgeon with a sacrifice fly that made the game 7-0.

Brennan Leitao came into the ninth and closed out the game for the Cardinals giving up a double but nothing more conserving the 7-0 shutout in favor of Palm Beach.
