FC Cincinnati Weekly Update: September 21, 2020
CINCINNATI - After playing three consecutive road matches, FC Cincinnati will be back at Nippert Stadium for a mid-week match against the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Following that match, the Orange and Blue will return to Harrison N.J. for a third consecutive Saturday contest as they will square off with New York City FC.
FC Cincinnati (3-6-3, 12 pts.) enter the week following a 1-0 victory at the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, Sept. 19. Midfielder Haris Medunjanin scored the game-winning goal in dramatic fashion as his Olimpico goal put the visitors in the lead in the 85th minute. Goalkeeper Spencer Richey made two saves to earn his first shutout of the season in his first start since March 7.
The Philadelphia Union (7-2-3, 24 pts.) open the week after defeating the Montreal Impact (5-5-1, 16 pts.), 4-1, at Red Bull Arena on Sunday, Sept. 20. Kacper Przybylko registered a brace as the Union scored four unanswered goals after conceding in the fifth minute.
New York City FC (2-5-1, 4 pts.) open the week after playing the New England Revolution (3-3-6, 15 pts.) to a scoreless draw at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 19. NYCFC are in the midst of a six-match unbeaten streak dating back to Aug. 24.
Medunjanin records latest GWG in FCC's MLS history
Midfielder Haris Medunjanin scored FC Cincinnati's first game-winning goal since July 22 in dramatic fashion ... Medunjanin's Olimipico goal marked the first time an FC Cincinnati player had scored directly from the corner flag in the club's MLS history ... additionally, the goal is also the latest game-winning goal recorded by the Orange and Blue through 46 all-time MLS regular season matches
Orange and Blue record first road win of campaign
With their 1-0 win against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, Sept. 19, FC Cincinnati claimed their first win of the 2020 campaign at a road venue ... while FC Cincinnati's 1-0 win against Atlanta United FC in the MLS is Back Tournament group stage is classified as an away victory, the match was played at a neutral venue ... FCC are 1-3-0 in matches played at road venues this season ... last season, the Orange and Blue posted a record of 3-11-3 in away matches
FCC remain perfect when scoring first goal
The Orange and Blue have scored first in a match on three occasions this season ... when Haris Medunjanin provided the only goal of FCC's match at New York on Sept. 19, FC Cincinnati improved to 3-0-0 in matches when recording the first goal of a match this season ... the club is now 9-5-3 all-time in MLS regular-season matches where they record the first goal of the match ... additionally, the Orange and Blue are now 2-1-3 in matches where neither team records a first-half lead
FC Cincinnati set new single-season shutout record
While Spencer Richey recorded his first shutout of the 2020 campaign in FCC's 1-0 win at the New York Red Bulls on Sept. 19, the Orange and Blue set a new single-season shutout record of six clean sheets in just 12 MLS regular-season matches ... last season, FC Cincinnati recorded a total of five shutouts through the entire 34-match campaign ... FCC currently rank second in MLS with six clean sheets recorded, trailing only the mark of nine set by Columbus Crew SC
Three players record first start in months
Defender Nick Hagglund, goalkeeper Spencer Richey and Brandon Vazquez recorded their first starts for Jaap Stam in FCC's 1-0 victory at the New York Red Bulls on Sept. 19 ... Hagglund made his first start of the 2020 season - his last start came on Oct. 6, 2019 ... the defender recorded seven interceptions, four tackles and three clearances ... Richey made his first start since March 7 at Atlanta United FC ... the goalkeeper made two saves en route to his first shutout of the season ... Vazquez made his first start since the season opener at New York on March 1 ... the forward registered two shots, including one shot on goal
