Extras Again Equal Victory for Dodgers

April 22, 2004 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - Three times this year, the Vero Beach Dodgers have gone into extra-innings. All three times, the Dodgers have been victorious, all three have been against the Palm Beach Cardinals and in all three, RHP Brian Steffek has been the winner, including Wednesday night's 6-5 game in Jupiter, FL. After a 9-0 defeat at the hands of the Cardinals a night earlier, the Dodgers put together perhaps their most complete game of the season to improve to 5-9 on the year. Six of the nine starters had at least two hits, including C Russell Martin, who launched his third home run of the season in the second inning to give the Dodgers their first lead. DH Russell Mitchell had his best game of the season, driving in three runs in a 2-4 night.

RHP Brad Baisley got the start for the Dodgers and tossed six strong frames, leaving the game with a 3-2 lead. After the Dodgers added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth, the Cardinals rallied to tie with three in the ninth, two coming off of RHP Beau Danemiller, and the equalizer, an unearned tally against Steffek.

Loading the bases with two outs in the tenth, the Dodgers got the eventual winning run when SS Joel Guzman scored on RHP Roberto Batista's wild pitch. Steffek closed the door in the bottom of the tenth to earn the victory (3-0).

The Dodgers travel to Viera, FL Thursday night to take on the Brevard County Manatees at 7:00 PM. LHP Mike Megrew is scheduled to come off the disabled list to make his first start of the season.
