Eight-Run Inning Sends Jupiter To 9th Straight Loss
August 13, 2011 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
In a rain-soaked game that was called two outs from a full nine innings, Jupiter gave up eight runs in the 7th frame, dropping its ninth straight in an 11-5 loss to Bradenton.
The Hammerheads must have thought they secured the night's biggest inning, scoring all five runs in the 3rd, with the first four crossing the plate before Jupiter's first out.
Singles by Gregg Glime and Jose Torres were followed by an Alfredo Lopez walk to load the bases for Chase Austin, who came through with an RBI single to tie the game 1-1.
Rand Smith followed with a ground ball through the left side that looked like it would only score Torres. But as Lopez began to head back to third, left fielder Adalberto Santos ran past the ball, allowing both Lopez and Austin to score as well. Jupiter added a final run on another Bradenton error to go up 5-1.
It was an important lead to take after starter Matt Montgomery only went one inning, allowing a triple and a single to score a run with two outs. After the right-hander's apparent injury, Kyle Kaminska went three frames, giving up a run in the 4th before making way for the rehabbing Marlins reliever Ryan Webb.
Webb, rumored to be just days away from rejoining the big league club, looked ready to get back to work, striking out two batters in a perfect 5th inning that made the game official. That distinction looked like it may be important as he exited to the first rumblings of thunder.
The storm stayed away for a short time, but as it broke, so too did the Hammerheads bullpen. Evan Reed, who retired the first four batters he faced, allowed the next four to reach, with a wild pitch making it 5-3 Hammerheads. He struck out Santos and made way for John Omahen, looking for one out to escape the bases loaded jam.
Omahen eventually got the out, but not before the next five batters reached base and plated seven more runs. Ramon Cabrera greeted the right-hander with a two-run single to tie the game, part of a three-hit, three-RBI night. Elevys Gonzalez's single scored the final of Reed's runners, putting him in line for the loss.
Still looking for the final out of the inning, Omahen gave up back-to-back two-run hits, first to Evan Chambers and then to Carlos Paulino. Chambers, Paulino, Gonzalez and Cabrera combined for all ten of Bradenton's RBIs on the night.
During the inning, rain began to fall, though not hard enough to drive the night's 2,204 fans out of their seats. But as the game continued, the rain fell harder and lightning became more frequent. It appeared the teams made a decided effort to finish the game, but a lightning strike during a mound meeting in the bottom of the 9th forced the umpire's hands, delaying and eventually ending the game.
If the Hammerheads are to avoid their second double-digit losing streak of the season, they'll have to take the finale against Bradenton on Sunday. Opening Day starter Rob Rasmussen is slated to face off Marauders' right-hander Brandon Cumpton in a 5:05 p.m. start at Roger Dean Stadium.
