Early Onslaught Guides Barons to 7-0 Victory

The win snaps a season long nine game losing streak for Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Eloy Jimenez provided the offensive spark with third three hit game in the last four contests and Brannon Easterling held down the pitching staff with six shutout innings in his longest outing of the year in a Barons win on Tuesday night.

The Barons got the scoring started in the bottom of the very first inning. Mason Robbins, batting in the leadoff spot, led the frame off with a single to left field and was brought around to score the first run on Nick Basto's 23rd double of the season.

The momentum kept on rolling for Birmingham heading in to the second inning. With the bases loaded and one out on the board, Mason Robbins hit a ground ball to short that was misplayed by Ozzie Martinez and allowed everyone to be safe and make the score 2-0. Hunter Jones knocked a single to left field immediately after to bring home two more runs, and Eloy Jimenez brought Jones around from second with an RBI single of his own and after two full innings, the scoreboard read 5-0 for the home team.

Courtney Hawkins got the third inning started much the same way that the previous two innings had gone when he clubbed his eighth double of the season to kick off the frame. Trey Michalczewski kept the train rolling offensively on an RBI single that scored Hawkins and made the score 6-0 Birmingham after three innings.

Birmingham tacked on a run in the seventh inning when Hunter Jones was hit by a pitch to get the frame started. Back to back singles set up Courtney Hawkins to ground into a run scoring double play that brought the Barons advantage to 7-0 after seven innings, an advantage that they would hold on to the rest of the game.

The Barons will play their final home game of the season tomorrow night against the Tennessee Smokies, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. CT at Regions Field. Left-hander Jordan Guerrero will take the ball for the Barons, while righty Zach Hedges will start for Tennessee. Curt Bloom will bring you all the action starting with the Coca-Cola pregame show starting at 6:55 p.m. on 105.5 FM WERC and the iHeart Radio app.
