Eagles Win Streak Ends in Québec City

February 7, 2020 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

QUEBEC CITY - The Cape Breton Eagles seven game winning streak came to an end on Friday night with a 3-0 defeat in Québec City against the Remparts.

The first period moved along at a brisk pace, with not a lot of high end opportunities to either side with the notable exception of a point blank shot for Remparts forward Hunter Holmes. All alone between the circles, Holmes was robbed after a dandy glove grab by Kevin Mandolese.

There were no goals in the first period, and almost no penalties either. Jarrett Baker was whistled to the box in the final minute of the period, and it would carry over into the second period. It was early in the middle frame, still on the man advantage, when the home team would strike first- Darien Kielb putting a shot through traffic and by Mandolese.

Before the seven minute mark, the lead would double. Aleksei Sergeev carried the puck through all three zones and finished with a nifty deke to push the edge to 2-0. That was the score heading into the final frame.

The Eagles earned their first power play of the night in the early stages of the third period, but it was on a penalty kill shortly after that they would get some of their best chances of the night. After Québec killed off the minor to Théo Rochette, the Eagles earned back to back short handed breakaways. Former Rempart Derek Gentile, likely playing his final game in the rink he first called home in the QMJHL, was unable to convert on either opportunity.

Remparts netminder Tristan Côté-Cazenave had at least one big stop left in him. Late in the third period, Shawn Boudrias sent a pass across to Egor Sokolov but Côté-Cazenave came across for a highlight reel pad stop.

Eagles coach Jake Grimes elected to be aggressive, pulling Mandolese for an extra attacker with over four minutes to play. The Eagles earned chances and in turn another power play: with Sergeev off it created a 6 on 4 opportunity.

Côté-Cazenave was not to be solved, however. Cape Breton did make Québec work for the empty net though as Eagles forward Ryan Francis made multiple stops. But in the final 20 seconds of the penalty Xavier Fillion hit the open cage with a long distance shot to seal a 3-0 win.

There were more fireworks following the goal as players exchanged words at centre ice. Québec's Thomas Caron was given a five minute major for spitting.

Côté-Cazenave collected the shutout, stopping all 27 Cape Breton shots. Mandolese turned aside 31 of 33 shots prior to the empty net goal.

The Eagles will continue the road trip tomorrow afternoon as they head to Blainville-Boisbriand to take on the Armada. Puck drop at is 5 PM Atlantic time. You can hear all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 4:30 on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com
