Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles scored early and often in an 8-3 rout over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at Centre 200 on Wednesday night.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead before the end of the first minute. Egor Sokolov deked around the goal and Gabriel Proulx hovered around the goal to bang it over the goal line.

It was still a 1-0 game past the halfway mark of the first period, and the Titan would tie the game up on a power play opportunity. Yan-Cédric Gaudreault had an opportunity at the side of the goal but wired it over an empty net. However he was able to chase his rebound, passed it out in front to Cole Rafuse who put the puck by Kevin Mandolese to knot the score at 1.

That was as close as Bathurst come throughout the night, and it wouldn't be long before the Eagles pulled ahead again- just 40 seconds later in fact. Mathias Laferrière converted a cross-crease pass from Shawn Boudrias to give the Eagles a lead they wouldn't let go of for the rest of the night. Before the end of the period the home side would add to the lead as Antoine Crete-Belzile whipped a shot through traffic in front of the net.

The Titan would cut the lead to 3-2 before the eight minute mark of the middle stanza as Evan MacKinnon scored from the top of the crease. Following the goal Eagles coach Marc-André Dumont would call a timeout and it appeared to have the desired effect. Once again the Eagles would score three times in the period, beginning with the eventual winning goal on a penalty shot by Ryan Francis. Francis was taken down by Alec Rhéaume. Coming off the left wing, Francis cut in front of the crease, then the opposite way and slid it through the legs of Tyriq Outen.

It would be 6-2 at period's end after goals by Mitchell Balmas and Leon Gawanke. Balmas's goal came on a shot over the shoulder of Outen while Gawanke converted a drop pass from Laferrière to push the lead to four goals.

Yan-Cédric Gaudreault would bring the Titan within three goals in the opening five minutes of the third period, tipping a shot by Mandolese. However the Eagles would again respond, establishing a five goal margin of victory. First it was Félix Lafrance tipping a point shot from Crete-Belzile, and then Laferrière converted a cross-crease pass to finish the scoring in the final few minutes.

Mandolese picked up the win, stopping 20 of 23 shots. Outen allowed eight goals on 49 shots in the loss.

The Screaming Eagles will now head out to Charlottetown for a pair of games on the weekend. Friday night's game goes at 7:30, and you can catch all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 7:00 on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com.
