Eagles Name Captains for 2020-21 Season

September 24, 2020 - Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) - Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Eagles have announced Shawn Element as team captain for the 2020-21 season, in addition to introducing alternate captains Jarrett Baker, Nathan Larose, and Ryan Francis.

Element was acquired from the Acadie-Bathurst Titan during last season's winter trading period. Element, who had spent the prior three seasons with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, was Bathurst's captain at the time of the trade. The 6'0, 192 pound forward notched 28 points in 29 games with the Eagles and finished tied for fifth in goals in the QMJHL with 38 for the full 2019-20 campaign. This upcoming season will be his fifth in the QMJHL.

Baker wore an "A" for the Eagles in the second half of last season, after being acquired in June of 2019 from the Drummondville Voltigeurs. The native of Black Rock collected 39 points in 59 games in his first season with Cape Breton, his fourth in the QMJHL. The 6'0, 206 pound blueliner was one of the nominees for the QMJHL's defensive defenseman of the year this past spring.

Larose was also named an alternate captain in the second half of last season. Acquired from Saint John during the winter trade period of the 2018-19 season, Larose produced 37 points in 51 games in his third full major junior campaign in 2019-20. The 6'2, 194 pound defenseman was tied for third in goals at his position with 17 last season.

While the other three skaters are overagers this season, Francis is coming into his 19 year old campaign. The now longest serving Eagle was 17th in league scoring last season with 72 points. Ahead of the upcoming NHL draft, the 5'9, 176 pound forward was ranked 55 among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting. Drafted by Cape Breton in 2017, this will be his fourth season in the QMJHL.

The new leadership group will play its first game with their new letters when the Eagles open the 2020-21 season against the Halifax Mooseheads on Friday, October 2nd, at Centre 200.
