Eagles Dump Cataractes to Conclude Perfect Home Stand

Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles finished a perfect 3-0 home stand on Saturday night with a decisive 4-1 victory over the Shawinigan Cataractes.

Just as was the case the night prior, the Eagles went to an early power play on a delay of game penalty- this time it was Xavier Cormier throwing the puck over the glass. Shawinigan killed the penalty off, but just six seconds later Olivier Bourret ripped a shot into the top corner over Justin Blanchette and the Eagles led 1-0.

Shawinigan looked as though they would escape the first period down by just one, but Mitchell Balmas had other ideas. The Eagles overage forward snapped a shot by the Cataractes netminder with just eight seconds to play before the horn and Cape Breton carried a 2-0 edge to the break.

The Eagles outshot the Cataractes 13-7 in the middle stanza and spent a large majority of the period in the Shawinigan end. Sustained possession resulted in another goal and a 3-0 edge, as Shaun Miller chased his own rebound and slid it through the wickets of Blanchette to make it 3-0. The lead would expand again prior to period's end, on a nice passing play between Declan Smith to Balmas. Smith fired the puck about halfway across the ice, Balmas cut in on Blanchette, switched to his backhand and slid it over the goal line for his second of the night.

There would be no further scoring from the home side in the final period, although Shawinigan's Vincent Senez would light the lamp to break Mandolese's shutout. The Cataractes captain capitalized when he found himself alone in front of the goal at the 16:13 mark. It was the first goal Mandolese had allowed on the weekend after shutting out Halifax the night prior, and it was the first goal the Screaming Eagles had allowed in 140:20 of game time dating back to Wednesday's win against Charlottetown.

Mandolese picked up the victory, stopping 21 of 22 shots. Blanchette allowed four goals on 29 shots in the loss.

The Screaming Eagles now head to Moncton with the beginning of a home and home series with the Moncton Wildcats on Wednesday night. Puck drop is at 7 PM, you can catch all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com.
