Cape Breton Eagles News Release

GATINEAU- The Cape Breton Eagles finished a season long road trip with a 7-3 win in Gatineau over the Olympiques. The Eagles went 4-2 on the six game swing through Quebec.

A strong first period set the tempo for the rest of the night for the Eagles. Ryan Francis took the first penalty of the game, but the Eagles killed it off and Francis would ring the puck off the crossbar and over the goal line just seven seconds after his penalty ended.

Then it was Gatineau getting into penalty trouble- with Braeden Virtue in the box, Adam Capannelli fired the puck over the glass to create a 5 on 3. The Olympiques killed off Virtue's minor, but a David Aebischer penalty created another 5 on 3 situation and Shawn Element capitalized to make it 2-0. While Gatineau would kill off the rest of the penalty, Mathias Laferrière stripped goaltender Tommy DaSilva of the puck outside the Olympiques net and the Eagles took a 3-0 lead into the break.

The second period was much less eventful- for the first 14 minutes. Another minor to Virtue had just elapsed- he hadn't even made it out of the penalty box- when Element hammered a one timer by DaSilva to make it 4-0. Before period's end, Francis would join Element in scoring his second of the night, and then Émile Hegarty-Aubin lit the lamp before the horn went to break the shutout and make it a 5-1 game.

Gatineau would make things interesting in the final frame- beginning with Adam Capanelli finishing a passing play from Pier-Olivier Roy behind the net. Then with 8:45 to go, Kevin Mandolese made an initial save but kicked out the rebound to Jérémy Rainville who cut the lead to 5-3.

Just over three minutes later the Eagles reassumed control of the game. Shawn Boudrias dug the puck out of a goal mouth scramble and lifted it over DaSilva to push the lead to 6-3.

Showing some faith in his team after their comeback attempt, Gatineau coach Eric Landry lifted his netminder in the final minute for an extra attacker. Félix Lafrance found the open goal to make it 7-3 and finish the scoring on the evening.

The Eagles will return home to Centre 200 ice on Wednesday night to host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Puck drop is at 7 PM, and tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp.
