 Norfolk Tides

Durham Dominant in 8-0 Win

June 9, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Durham used a strong outing from Mike Montgomery and three runs batted in from Wilson Betemit to sink the Tides 8-0 Monday night at Harbor Park.

Norfolk entered the contest hitting .350 while averaging 7.1 runs per game in June, but Montgomery (7-1) held the Tides to just three hits over seven innings of work. Montgomery struck out five and retired 13 consecutive batters at one point as he picked up his seventh victory - tied for the third-most in the IL this season.

In his fourth appearance with Norfolk on a rehab assignment, Edgmer Escalona (1-1) took the loss despite turning in a very solid effort. Escalona, who was making his first professional start after 360 career outings in relief, worked a career-high 5.0 innings while matching his career-high with five strikeouts. He needed just 59 pitches to navigate his outing, but he was victimized by two home runs - a solo shot by Wilson Betemit and a two-run homer by Mike Fontenot - as he departed trailing 3-0.

Betemit, who appeared in 108 games with Baltimore from 2012-13, finished with three RBI in the contest as he later added a two-run double in the seventh inning off of Nick Additon.

The Tides were limited to just four hits in the contest - all of which were singles. The four-hit output snapped a stretch in which Norfolk had collected 10 or more hits in six consecutive games.

The two teams will conclude their series Tuesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05 pm. Suk-min Yoon (2-5, 5.86) will make the start for Norfolk against right-hander Alex Colome (1-0, 0.00).
