Durbin Deals Lancaster To Win

September 3, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

J.D. Durbin only needed 86 pitches on Monday evening to fire a complete game three-hitter in a 5-1 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish in the opener of a four-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the win, the Barnstormers cut the number of victories still needed to break the Atlantic League record down to eight. There are 19 games remaining on the schedule.

Durbin (12-9) was reached for a third inning home run by former Barnstormer Brad Boyer. Otherwise, the right-hander allowed only two singles. He walked none and struck out five.

Lancaster put together a pair of unearned runs in the second inning off Bridgeport ace Paul Oseguera (10-5). Fehlandt Lentini reached base when his grounder to short was fumbled by Eddie Rogers. One out later, Travis Denker banged a single into right center, sending Lentini to third. Kody Kirkland got one run home with a weak grounder up the third base line. The second came home when Francisco Hernandez floated a single into short left to plate Denker.

Oseguera held his ground until the sixth. The Barnstormers got off to a false start when Adam Godwin doubled into the right field corner but was thrown out going to third. Blake Gailen followed with a double to right. Lentini hit a chopper toward third. Boyer raced in and made a barehanded pick and snapped a throw to first. Base umpire Mike Terry ruled that Lentini beat the throw, setting off a firestorm of controversy that led to the ejections of both Bridgeport manager Willie Upshaw and his right-hand man Terry McGriff.

Play resumed with designated hitter Willis Otanez and catcher Luis Rodriguez co-managing the visitors. Gailen scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Ryan Harvey, and Denker followed with a two-run homer down the left field line, his seventh of the year, to break open a 5-1 lead.

The series will continue on Tuesday evening as Mark Brackman (8-8) will match up against lefty Gilbert De La Vara (9-8). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
