Dunedin Holds on for 6-5 Victory in Daytona

May 19, 2018 - Florida State League (FSL1) - Dunedin Blue Jays News Release

Coming off losing three of four to the Tampa Tarpons, the Dunedin Blue Jays picked up a 6-5 victory over the Daytona Tortugas in game one of a three game weekend series at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Dunedin used six pitchers on the night with LHP Matthew Gunter making his first start of the year and sixth of his professional career, giving up an earned run on two hits over four inning pitched. The Blue Jays gave Gunter some early run support by plating three runs in the first three innings, highlighted by an RBI single from Alberto Mineo in the first and D.J. Davis' solo homerun over the wall in left in the second.

Tyler Stephenson got Daytona on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double scoring Taylor Trammell to make it 3-1 Dunedin. Two innings later, Dunedin answered with a couple of runs of their own. Singles from Riley Adams and Kacy Clemens knocked RHP Ryan Olsen out of the game. The Tortugas starter left after going five innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits. Nash Knight then belted a double to the left center field gap off righty Alex Webb to score Adams and Clemens and extend Dunedin's lead to 5-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, RHP Jonathan Cheshire took the mound for his second inning of work and gave up a leadoff homerun to Taylor Trammell. After the Jays scored a run in the top of the seventh, righty Jackson McClelland took the mound and gave up a homerun to T.J. Friedl, cutting the Blue Jays lead in half at 6-3.

Things became dicey for Dunedin in the bottom of the eighth. RHP Nick Hartman took the ball for the Blue Jays out of the pen. With one man out, former Blue Jays farmhand Mitch Nay singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Narciso Crook followed with a flare single to right to put runners at the corners for Daytona. Manager Ricky Gutierrez decided to go to his bench and pinch hit Bruce Yari who served a single to left to score Nay. Two batters later, Shane Mardirosian registered an RBI with a cracked bat single to right to score Crook to slice the Blue Jays lead to 6-5.

The offense for Daytona ran out of steam though in the ninth as the combination of Hartman and LHP Travis Bergen shut the door to send Dunedin to the 6-5 victory.

Cheshire picked up his third win of the year, while the southpaw Bergen notched his first save in 2018. On the offensive side of things, Dunedin received three hits from Logan Warmoth, and two hits apiece from Alberto Mineo and Kacy Clemens.

The series continues tomorrow evening in Daytona Beach, FL as RHP Josh DeGraaf (1-5, 4.01) gets the start tomorrow for Dunedin in his return to the Blue Jays against LHP Wennington Romero (4-1, 2.79) for the Tortougas. The first pitch is set for 7:05 E.T.
