
Ducks defeat Newark

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 6, 2008) - The Long Island Ducks evened their four-game series with Newark on Friday, defeating the Bears 9-8 before a past-capacity crowd of 6,212 at Citibank Park.
The Ducks fell behind 5-0 in the second inning, but rallied to cut the lead to two. In the fourth, Long Island punched out five runs on six straight hits. Jamie Pogue tied the game with a single which scored two runs, and Donaldo Mendez followed with his second home run of the year to put Long Island in front. Brent Abernathy drove home the fifth run after Alex Sanchez tripled to put the Ducks ahead 8-5. The Bears clawed back to tie the game at eight with three runs in the sixth, but the Ducks answered in bottom of the inning on a run-scoring infield hit by Pete Maestrales.
Carl Everett went 4-for-5 at the plate, and Jamie Pogue notched three hits as well. Estee Harris was 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Pete Maestrales, who entered the game in the fourth inning, went 2-for-3 and drove home the winning run.
Neither starter factored in the decision. Manny Ulloa went five and one-third innings for Long Island, allowing eight runs - five earned - on ten hits. Mike Bumstead was chased after three and two-thirds innings. The righty was responsible for 11 hits and eight runs, seven of which were earned. Ryan Knippschild (2-2) picked up the win, giving up just one hit in one and two-thirds innings of relief, while Edwin Almonte (2-1) took the loss. Todd Williams got three ground balls in the ninth to earn his third save.
The Ducks continue their four-game series on Saturday against Newark. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m., and the Citibank Park gates open at 6:05 p.m. The first 1,500 fans to the ballpark will receive Thunderstix, courtesy of the Knights of Columbus.
