Dubuque Bounces Back with 5-3 Win over Muskegon

December 30, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

Hobie Hedquist made key stops and Dubuque's power play scored three times in their road win over Muskegon, 5-3. The Saints bounced back in a big way from a 7-1 loss the night before, grabbing their first win over the Jacks this season. Robert Cronin, Tristan Lemyre and Daniyal Dzhaniyev all recorded two points in the game.

-The Fighting Saints started the scoring on Wednesday night as they were able to strike just 2:40 into the first period. Robert Cronin deposited a feed from Kenny Connors over the glove of Jan Skorpik for his sixth goal of the season. Cronin's goal put him just one off the team lead.

-Dubuque played a great neutral zone game in the first period against the Jacks, limiting their ability to gain speed through the neutral zone. Muskegon's chances were limited in the first 20 minutes because of that.

-Hobie Hedquist robbed Danil Gushchin on a shorthanded breakaway late in the first period. Just seconds after the save, Stephen Halliday ripped a shot past Skorpik to make it 2-0. The quick strike would hold until the end of the period as Dubuque maintained their 2-0 lead.

-Dubuque extended their lead to three in the second period, capitalizing on another power play opportunity. Tristan Lemyre scored from the left dot on the PP to give Dubuque power play goals in three straight games.

-Hobie Hedquist came up huge again on a shorthanded breakaway, this time shutting down Rhett Pitlick who beat him three times last night.

-Muskegon was able to claw their way back into the game late in the period as they scored two goals in the last six minutes of the third. Quinn Hutson notched the first on a Lemyre giveaway and then shortly after that Tanner Kelly wacked away at a loose puck in front and banged it past Hedquist to help the Jacks creep closer.

-Dubuque went back to bottling up the Muskegon offense in the third period as the Jacks mustered little offense for the first 10 minutes of the period. In fact, the shots were just 6-5 for Muskegon at the end of the third.

-Daniyal Dzhaniyev recorded the third power play goal of the night for the Saints to give Dubuque a 4-2 lead with five minutes left in the game. However, Muskegon powered back within one on a goal from Dylan Wendt.

-With the goalie pulled, PJ Fletcher iced the game with an empty-netter to restore the two goal advantage.

-Dubuque will take the ice after the New Year at home as they play January 2 nd and 3rd. Puck drop is 7:05 and 3:05 for the Saturday, Sunday contests.
