Drive Fall 3-1 to RiverDogs in Series
July 11, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Offense came at a premium during the first two games of the series between the Greenville Drive (11-10, 33-57) and the Charleston RiverDogs (10-8, 49-37), and the series finale was no different. The RiverDogs were able to get the big hit when they needed to on Thursday, and that propelled them to a 3-1 victory.
Charleston struck first in the bottom of the second with Justin Haley (4-8) on the mound for the Drive. Dante Bichette, Jr. lined a double to right to lead off the inning, and Aaron Gates followed by lining an RBI single to left field.
They scored again in the third. Haley walked a pair of batters in the inning, and Angelo Gumbs delivered a two-out RBI single to left field to push the lead to 2-0.
Despite giving up two runs and walking four in four innings of work, Haley struck out seven RiverDogs batters on the night.
The Drive got their only run of the night in the sixth. Dreily Guerrero hit a one-out, ground-rule double, advanced to third on a groundout and was plated on Jose Vinicio's single to left.
Daniel Camarena (2-3) got the victory for Charleston as he allowed just one run and five hits in six innings while striking out four.
The RiverDogs tacked on an insurance run in the seventh against Drive reliever Yunior Ortega, as Jake Cave was hit by a pitch and came around to score on Cito Culver's RBI triple to left.
That run was the only blemish against Ortega in an effective relief outing, as he allowed just two hits and punched out five.
John Brebbia and Ben Paullus finished the game for the RiverDogs with three scoreless frames, with two of those coming from Paullus en route to his sixth save of the year.
Gumbs had a pair of hits for Charleston, while David Chester collected two hits for Greenville.
From here, the Drive will continue their road trip as they begin a four-game series with the Savannah Sand Gnats on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05. RHP Luis Diaz (4-4, 3.06) is the scheduled starter for the Drive, while the Sand Gnats will send LHP Steven Matz (3-4, 2.28) to the mound.
