Dragons Go to Extra Innings, Fall 1-0 in Wisconsin
July 19, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Dayton Dragons News Release
Appleton, Wisc. - Wisconsin's Payton Henry delivered a game-winning sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to break a scoreless tie and defeat the Dayton Dragons 1-0 on Thursday night. The Timber Rattlers have won the first two games of the three-game series.
Dayton pitchers Patrick McGuff and Wendolyn Bautista combined to shutout Wisconsin over the first nine innings on only four hits. Wisconsin had just three runners as far as second base over the first nine innings and did not advance a man to third.
The game went to the top of the 10th inning with the Dragons starting the frame with their free runner at second base, Mark Kolozsvary. Alejo Lopez bunted to the pitcher, who threw to third, but Wisconsin's Gilbert Lara missed the tag and Kolozsvary was safe, leaving runners at first and third with no one out. But Malik Collymore struck out, Jose Garcia popped to second, and Andy Sugilio struck out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Timber Rattlers sacrificed their free runner to third, and Henry hit a fly ball to right field to bring in the winning run. Sugilio's throw home beat the runner, but the throw was about five feet up the third base line and Kolozsvary could not make the sweeping tag as the winning run scored.
McGuff, the former star at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, made his second start with the Dragons. He worked five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The Timber Rattlers advanced only one runner as far as second base against McGuff. Bautista was also outstanding but was charged with the loss. He allowed just two hits and one unearned run over four and two-thirds innings, striking out six and walking one.
The Dragons had only five hits, all belonging to Sugilio or Kolozsvary. Sugilio was 3 for 5 with a double. Kolozsvary was 2 for 4 with a double. The Dragons were 0 for 9 with men in scoring position.
The Dragons fell to 12-15 in the second half. They have lost three straight games after winning three straight. They remained one game out of the wildcard slot in the Midwest League East Division Second Half playoff chase.
Up Next: The Dragons (12-15, 43-52) close out the three-game series with the Timber Rattlers (12-14, 43-52) on Friday at 8:05 p.m. in Appleton.
