Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Lake County Captains (affiliate of the Cleveland Indians) in the first game of a four-game series. Season Series: Dayton 9, Lake County 5, (at Dayton: Dragons 5, Captains 2).
Streaks: Dayton has won seven of their last nine games.
Last Night: Dayton lost at West Michigan 10-5 last night, snapping the Dragons five-game winning streak. Juan Duran hit a three-run home run for Dayton and Donald Lutz had two hits and an RBI. West Michigan's Jason Krizan hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs.
Today's Dragons Starting Pitcher: Mitch Clarke makes his fourth start and fifth appearance with the Dragons tonight. Clarke earned the win on Monday at Lake County in his last start (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO). In Clarke's three starts, he has allowed a total of one run in 16.1 innings. Clarke was promoted to Dayton from Billings on July 21 when Kyle Lotzkar went on the disabled list. Clarke appeared in five games (two starts) this season with Billings, going 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 20 innings. He pitched with the AZL Reds last season, going 3-1, 2.08 in 12 games (six starts). Clarke was the Reds 19th round draft pick in 2009 out of high school in Kitchener, Ontario
Individual Notes
* Ronald Torreyes leads the classification (Midwest League and South Atlantic League; 30 teams) in second half base hits (65) and is tied for first in runs (40). In the half, he is third in the MWL in batting average (.351) (starting June 24). Torreyes is batting .358 since joining the club on June 17.
* Billy Hamilton is batting .314 over his last 37 games, raising his average from .223 to .254. He has 79 stolen bases to set the Dragons club record for single-season and career steals. He leads all of professional baseball in steals. No other Minor League player has stolen more than 76 bases in a season since 2006, when Eric Young of Asheville stole 87. Hamilton is also second in the league in runs scored for the year.
* David Vidal is batting .342 with 11 HR and 44 RBI in his last 45 games, raising his average from .267 to .299 (9th in the MWL).
* Daniel Wolford over his last 29 G: 46.2 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 0.58 ERA to lower his season ERA from 4.50 to 1.38. He has not allowed a run since June 9 (17 games, 27.2 innings).
* Blaine Howell has been unscored upon in 14 of his last 16 appearances. Over the span, he has allowed three runs in 21 innings (1.29 ERA).
* Drew Hayes has not allowed a run over his last eight outings covering 8.1 innings. His 19 saves rank tied for first in the MWL.
* Chad Rogers has allowed no runs over his last seven outings covering 12.2 innings.
Team Notes
* Dayton went 5-1 on their six-game road trip, outscoring their opponents 36-16 (they had outscored opponents 31-6 entering Friday's game).
* With 24 games to play in the second half, the Dragons have a five and one-half game cushion to earn a second-half playoff berth. The top two second half clubs among a group of Dayton, Great Lakes, West Michigan, Fort Wayne, Lake County, and South Bend will qualify.
* Dayton has held at least a share of first place for the last 45 days (since June 29). They have been in first place for all but four days of the half.
* The Dragons had held their opponent to three runs or less in eight straight games and two runs or less in six of the last eight entering last night's game. They had allowed 12 runs in the previous eight games. On the road trip, Dayton pitchers had allowed six runs (four earned) in five games in 42 innings entering last night's game, when they allowed 10 runs (nine earned).
* The Dragons are batting .276 in the second half (46 games) after hitting .241 in the first half (70 games). The Dragons are averaging 5.7 runs per game in the second half (4.23 in the first half). The Dragons led the league in team batting in July at .285.
* The Dragons have stolen 178 bases to rank first in all of professional baseball. They have already broken the club record for a season.
* Five Dragons are rated among the Reds top 30 prospects according to Baseball America. They include shortstop Billy Hamilton (#2), starting pitcher Kyle Lotzkar (#10), starting pitcher Daniel Corcino (#15), second baseman Ronald Torreyes (#22) and outfielder Juan Duran (#28).
