Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Balbino Fuenmayor collected three hits and drove in three runs as the Lansing Lugnuts won their sixth straight game on Tuesday night, topping the Dayton Dragons 6-3 at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons loss snapped their six-game home winning streak and dropped their record to 18-20. Lansing improved to 23-14.
Lansing took a 4-0 lead in the third inning, taking advantage of an error by Dragons second baseman Henry Rodriguez that led to three unearned runs. Balbino Fuenmayor had a two-out, two-run single that capped the inning.
The Dragons got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Back-to-back walks to Efrain Contreras and Mark Fleury started the inning, and Frank Pfister followed with a bouncing ball single to left to bring in Contreras and make it 4-1. One batter later, Rodriguez's infield ground out brought in Fleury from third pull the Dragons to within two at 4-2.
In the seventh, a base running mistake cost the Dragons a chance at a comeback. Still trailing 4-2, Contreras led off the inning with a bunt single. With one out, Pfister drilled a ball just beyond the reach of Lansing left fielder Eric Eiland off the left field fence. As the ball bounced back toward the infield, Contreras headed back toward first base, apparently thinking the ball had been caught. Pfister raced around first to second, and passed Contreras on the base paths, resulting in Pfister being called out. The inning ended when Alex Oliveras struck out.
Lansing added two more runs in the top of the eighth and the Dragons scored once in the bottom of the inning to close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher J.C. Sulbaran retired the last 10 batters he faced in an outing that lasted six innings. He allowed five hits and four runs (one earned) with three walks and six strikeouts and was charged with the loss.
Pfister went 3 for 4 with an RBI to lead a nine-hit Dayton attack.
The Dragons host the Lugnuts again on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Josh Ravin (2-2, 2.52) will start for Dayton against Chad Jenkins (2-2, 3.59). The set with Lansing will be followed by a series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field. That series will include a day-night doubleheader on Saturday, May 22nd with games at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. The noon contest is a make-up game resulting from a postponement on Sunday, May 2nd. All tickets to the May 2nd game will be honored at the noon game on May 22nd. Call the Dragons at (937) 228-2287 for more information.
