Downs Hits 3 Homers, Leads Rockers to Win

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Jerry Downs slammed three home runs and the High Point Rockers opened a three-game series with a 13-4 win over the Lexington Legends at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

Downs hit three solo homers, one each in the second, fifth and eighth innings. The homers were part of a franchise-record 22-hit attack. Every Rocker in the starting line-up had at least one hit with six players recording multiple hits.

Johnny Field finished with four hits and two RBI while Giovanny Alfonzo had three hits and an equal number of RBI. Downs finished the night with four hits and four RBI. Rookie J.R. DiSarcina had three hits including a double and drove in four runs.

Lexington took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Ben Aklinski hit a solo homer, his 10th blast of the year.

The Rockers scored four times in the second. Downs led off the inning with a solo homer, his ninth of the year. With two outs, James McOwen and Mike Gulino each rapped singles before DiSarcina plated both runners with a double. Field then singled to drive in DiSarcina and give High Point a 4-1 lead.

Downs hit a solo homer in the fifth for a 5-1 lead. Alfonzo drove in Gulino in the sixth for a 6-1 advantage.

In the seventh, Stuart Levy and Jared Mitchell singled before McOwen drew a walk to load the bases. DiSarcina singled to drive in two runs and Alfonzo drove in two more runs with a ground rule double. Field added an RBI double as well as the Rockers surged to an 11-1 lead.

Downs' third homer of the night came in the eighth and made it a 12-1 game.

Lexington scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to close the gap to 12-4. In the ninth, Alfonzo doubled then scored on a single by Downs to account for the 13-4 final.

Starter Tommy Lawrence (5-2) went 6.1 innings and allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three while keeping the Legends at bay all night. He is tied for the team lead with five wins this season.

High Point finished the first half of the season with a 31-29 record and finished in second place in the South Division.

High Point will remain in Lexington for game two of the three-game series on Wednesday. First pitch from Whitaker Bank Ballpark at 7:05 p.m.
