Albany Devils News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Joe Whitney only needed three shots to register his first career hat trick. The Albany Devils only needed the first 20 minutes against the Springfield Falcons to establish a 4-0 lead and hold on for a 5-2 victory Saturday at MassMutual Center.
The win moves the Devils to 18-15-5-3 on the year, while the Falcons go to 18-19-1-2.
Whitney's hat trick was the second for the Devils in the past four days. Stephane Veilleux contributed three goals against Norfolk Wednesday. Whitney takes over as the team's leader for points (24) and goals (11).
Kory Nagy also enjoyed a multi-goal game with his first and second goals of the season. Entering the night, his last AHL goal was on against Providence on Apr. 11, 2010.
Mattias Tedenby, who was loaned by New Jersey to Albany earlier in the day, wasted no time contributing to the Albany lineup. He had assists on Whitney's first two goals, which came at 3:38 and 5:26. The second was on the power-play.
Nagy interrupted Whitney's scoring at 12:53 with his first goal of the season, giving the Devils a 3-0 lead.
At 17:19, Whitney completed his three-goal quest with a wrist shot from the right circle. Tim Sestito, who also assisted on the first goal, had the first helper and Vladimir Zharkov had the second assist.
After Springfield clawed back to 4-2, Nagy netted his second tally of the game at 17:10 to produce the final result.
Between the pipes, Keith Kinkaid made 27 stops for his 10th win of the season (10-11-2).
Springfield's Cam Atkinson and Alexander Giroux were the only players to solve the Albany netminder. Atkinson scored his team-leading 23rd goal, which came with the man advantage, at 6:02 of the third period. Giroux also scored on the power play at 16:09 for his 13th tally of the year.
The Devils return to action Friday when they travel to Binghamton for a 7:05 p.m. contest. Fans can listen to that game on 104.5 "The Team" ESPN Radio or online at ahllive.com
