Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Joey DeMichele hit a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, lifting Winston-Salem to a 6-4 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in front of a crowd of 6,856 Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark.

Tied 2-2 entering the ninth, the Pelicans (34-28, 74-57) took the lead against Winston reliever Joseph Dvorsky (2-3). Trever Adams made it 3-2 with a run-scoring single, and Joe Maloney added an insurance run for Myrtle with a sacrifice fly.

Winston-Salem (28-33, 66-65) got some help from Myrtle Beach to rally in the bottom of the ninth. Relievers Cody Kendall and Ryan Harvey (7-2) each walked a batter, and the Birds mixed in a pair of errors to load the bases with two out for DeMichele. DeMichele unloaded on an offering from Harvey for a walk-off grand slam, his second homer of the game and third walk-off hit this season.

The win stretches Winston-Salem's winning streak to a new season-high six contests and snaps a season-long five-game skid within the friendly confines of BB&T Ballpark.

The Dash took little time in getting to Pelicans starter Luis Parra as DeMichele took the southpaw for an early 1-0 lead after one.

The lead held up all the way until the seventh. Winston-Salem starter Mike Recchia had wiggled his way out of a few jams in the middle frames but gave up a two-run homer to Chris Grayson to put the Pelicans ahead for the first time.

The lead did not last long, as the Dash tied it in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and Courtney Hawkins at third, Grant Buckner beat out an infield single to allow Hawkins to score the tying run.

The Dash and Pelicans continue this three-game series Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. Right-hander Jake Cose (6-4, 3.74 ERA) will got the nod for Winston-Salem, while the Pelicans will counter with fellow righty Kevin Pucetas (1-1, 4.35 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 2, and coverage on wsdash.com/broadcast begins at 1:45.

The Dash's final homestand continues Sunday afternoon for their final matinee contest of the 2013 season. It will also be the final Pups in the Park day of the year, presented by Ruff Housing. For tickets, call (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
