(LANCASTER, CA) - The Lancaster JetHawks defense was ranked the highest in the California League going into Thursday night's game, but a pair of mistakes in the sixth inning led to a four-run frame for the High Desert Mavericks and a 5-4 loss for the JetHawks. Lancaster had several chances to add runs, but left 12 runners on base and had just three hits in 17 at bats with runners in scoring position.

Lancaster starter Jeff Icenogle continued to befuddle Mavericks hitters, mixing his curveball and fastball for seven strikeouts in five innings. The only run he allowed came in the third inning. The JetHawks got that run back in their half of the third inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Jon Gaston. The lead was extended on another sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and a Brian Pellegrini single in the fifth that put Lancaster ahead 3-1.

High Desert loaded the bases with no one out in the sixth inning. Edilio Colina hit what looked like a double-play ground ball to shortstop Chris Jackson, but Jackson struggled to get the ball out of his glove and everyone was safe. On the next pitch Jamie McOwen hit a single to right field that drove in the tying and go-ahead runs. McOwen was caught in a rundown between first and second base, but while Jackson was trying to tag out McOwen, Colina snuck home from third base to put High Desert ahead by two.

There were chances for the JetHawks in the late innings as they advanced a runner to third base with less than two outs in the seventh and eighth inning, but Lancaster was unable to push the tying run across the plate.

Marcos Cabral led the Lancaster attack with three hits, including a double, while Jason Castro extended his hitting streak to five consecutive games with a pair of singles.

Game two of the series will take place Friday night. After the game the JetHawks will host their first fireworks spectacular of the season, which will follow Launch-A-Ball. Chris Hicks (1-0) will start for Lancaster against High Desert's Nate Adcock (0-1). The first pitch will be at 7:00 PM. The radio broadcast on Magic 1340 and JetHawks.com will begin with the Pre-Game show at 6:45.
