Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va. - Behind a phenomenal start from Luis Martinez and scoreless relief outings from Zach Thompson and Matt Foster, the Dash shut out the Potomac Nationals 3-0 on Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium.
Martinez (3-3), who had lost his previous two outings entering the night, logged his best start as a member of the Dash (26-22). The right-hander went six innings against the Nationals (25-19), allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out three.
The lone scoring in the series opener took place with two outs in the second. After Potomac's starter Tyler Mapes (3-1) registered two quick outs, the righty hit Zach Remillard to extend the inning. After Ti'Quan Forbes followed with a single, Daniel Gonzalez, who was activated off the disabled list on Thursday, stroked a run-scoring single to right in his first at-bat of the season to put Winston-Salem ahead 1-0.
The next batter, Joel Booker, lined an RBI single to center to make it a 2-0 contest. Later in the frame, with Mitch Roman at the plate, Mapes made an errant pickoff attempt to second with Booker on the move, throwing a ball into center to bring home Gonzalez to cap the scoring.
Thompson replaced Martinez in the seventh and proceeded to toss two shutout innings, setting the stage for Foster to wrap up the victory. Foster allowed one hit but he struck out two in the final frame to seal his third save of the season. The former 20th-round pick has allowed just one earned run over his last 14 innings.
The Dash continue their four-game series against the P-Nats at Pfitzner Stadium on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Winston-Salem sends left-hander Bernardo Flores to the hill against Nationals righty Sterling Sharp (4-2, 3.21 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:20 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action at wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio App.
Following their seven-game road swing, the Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a three-game set against the Carolina Mudcats from June 1-3.
