Curve Off to 4-0 Start After Series Sweep of Trenton
April 9, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA -- The Altoona Curve downed Trenton, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon to sweep the series and match their best start in franchise history at 4-0. Curve starter Josh Shortslef got the win for Altoona, allowing one run on five hits, walking none and striking out three over his five innings of work. Vic Buttler was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI to pace the Curve offense.
After scoring only one run in the previous 24 innings, the Thunder struck first blood on Sunday as an RBI groundout from Bronson Sardinha plated Shelley Duncan and gave Trenton a 1-0 edge.
The lead was short lived however, when in the bottom of the fifth, the Curve jumped in front for good. Octavio Martinez doubled and Rich Thompson singled and advanced to second on a throwing error to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Buttler took advantage of the opportunity by lacing a single to center to plate both runners and put Altoona in front by the count of 2-1. An RBI double from Rafael Alvarez and a Travis Chapman sac-fly pushed the lead to 4-1.
Trenton rallied, scoring a single run in the eighth, but Josh Sharpless pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season and close out the victory for Altoona.
The Curve are the only unbeaten team remaining in the Eastern League, and they will look to improve on their franchise best 4-0 start when they take on the Erie SeaWolves in the opening game of a three game set on Monday evening at 6:35 pm. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a schedule poster for the Curve's sister franchise, the State College Spikes. Great seats are still available and can be purchased at the Blair County Ballpark ticket office, by calling the Curve toll-free at (877) 99-Curve, or by logging on to AltoonaCurve.com
