Curve Hold off SeaWolves for 5-3 Win on Saturday

ERIE, Pa. - The Altoona Curve held off a late threat from the Erie SeaWolves to pick up a 5-3 win on Saturday night at UPMC Park, snapping their three-game losing streak.

The Curve (36-32) and SeaWolves (32-40) were originally scheduled to play a double-header on Saturday, but instead played a single, nine-inning game after play was delayed by two hours and 38 minutes due to wet grounds.

Trailing 2-1 entering the fifth inning, Jason Martin, Will Craig and Bryan Reynolds came through with three straight RBI singles to put the Curve ahead, 4-2, against Erie starter Kyle Funkhouser (Loss, 3-4).

The SeaWolves responded with an RBI triple by Dominic Ficociello in the bottom of the inning, but Pedro Vasquez (Win, 2-4) stranded him at third to preserve the one-run lead.

In the seventh, Jason Martin led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Mark Ecker before scoring on a second wild pitch, extending the Altoona advantage to 5-3.

Sean Keselica worked through two scoreless innings and Geoff Hartlieb (Save, 6) worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

Erie loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Hartlieb struck out Sergio Alcantara on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

Ke'Bryan Hayes started the scoring for the Curve in the first inning with a one-out, solo home run, his fourth of the season.

The SeaWolves answered with solo homers by Jacob Robson and Daz Cameron in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.

Vasquez picked up his second consecutive win after allowing three runs over five innings with one walk and six strikeouts. Hartlieb struck out five over his two innings, working around two hits and a walk.

Martin finished the night with three hits, including a double and an RBI, and he scored two runs. Craig went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

The second game of the scheduled double-header was postponed. A make-up date has not yet been announced.

With the win, the Curve remain in third place in the Eastern League Western Division, a half-game behind second-place Harrisburg and three games behind first-place Akron.

The Curve and SeaWolves conclude the three-game series on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Eduardo Vera (1-1, 4.74) is scheduled to start for the Curve, opposed by SeaWolves right-hander Beau Burrows (5-5, 3.36). First pitch at UPMC Park is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
