Curve Fall to Flying Squirrels, 6-1, on Wednesday

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Altoona Curve struck out 14 times and lost to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 6-1, on Wednesday night at The Diamond.

One night after celebrating clinching a postseason spot, the Curve (71-64) fell behind early and never threatened the Flying Squirrels (60-75).

Richmond opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning against Curve starter J.T. Brubaker (Loss, 7-6). Hunter Cole clubbed an RBI single and K.C. Hobson added a two-run single to put the Flying Squirrels ahead, 3-0.

In the fourth, Brandon Bednar brought home two runs with a single to extend Richmond's lead to 5-0.

The Curve broke the shutout in the sixth inning. Jerrick Suiter hit a two-out double and came around to score on a single by Wyatt Mathisen.

Richmond added to the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo homer by Jerry Sands off of Altoona reliever Johnny Hellweg.

Brubaker was removed after three innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Making his Double-A debut, Curve lefty Daniel Zamora worked around a hit and two walks to post two scoreless innings. Hellweg allowed one run on two hits in two innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Tate Scioneaux worked through bottom of the eighth inning with one strikeout.

Richmond starter Nick Reed (Win, 3-2) struck out 11 over his 6.2 innings, surrendering one run on five hits and three walks.

The Curve and Flying Squirrels wrap up the series on Thursday night. Lefty Brandon Waddell (3-3, 3.66) will be pitching for the Curve, opposed by Richmond right-hander Dan Slania (5-3, 3.62).
