Curtin Call, Saints Sign Central Connecticut Pitcher

June 15, 2019 - American Association (AA) - St. Paul Saints News Release

GARY, IN - The St. Paul Saints had an opening in their rotation and needed a rookie to fill the spot. They're turning to someone who last pitched on the big stage of a college regional and shined. The Saints signed right-handed pitcher Tom Curtin to his first professional contract, and he is scheduled to start the regularly scheduled game on Saturday night against the Gary SouthShore RailCats at the U.S. Steel Yard.

Curtin, who just finished his four-year career at Central Connecticut, went 6-3 with a 3.86 ERA and a complete game shutout in 15 starts. In 95.2 innings pitched he walked 25 and struck out 53 while opponents hit .283 against him. His best performance came in a 9.0 inning complete game six-hit shutout, while striking out five on May 23 against Wagner in the first game of the Northeast Conference Tournament. He started the Championship game and allowed two runs in 5.2 innings, a game the Blue Devils would come from behind and win. Curtin's numbers across two games earned him the Northeast Conference Tournament MVP. Curtin then earned the win in the program's first ever Regional victory. He went 7.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out two in a win over Cal in the Fayetteville Regional.

In his four-year career with the Blue Devils, Curtin went 10-5 with a 5.10 ERA and two saves in 47 appearances (17 starts). In 144.2 innings pitched he walked 44 and struck out 76. During his sophomore season, Curtin was named to the Northeast Conference All-Tournament Team. His 3.2 shutout innings of relief against Sacred Heart in the Northeast Conference Championship game, earned him the win and the Blue Devils a spot into the Fort Worth Regional.

The Saints roster now stands at 22, 11 pitchers and 11 position players.
