Cubo Arrives at Chivas USA with One Objective: Succeed

July 14, 2013 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

With a short, but great experience in Mexican soccer, forward Erick 'Cubo' Torres joins Chivas USA from sister club Chivas Guadalajara. After making his professional debut in 2010, Torres has participated in 61 games, notching 14 goals, something that he'd like to exceed with the LA club.

"I feel very happy, motivated for this new experience, a new stage in my life. I feel motivated to come and do things right, and taking a big step in my career. I feel very happy to be here with the coaching staff that there is and with the teammates I have over here," the 20 year-old forward said.

At the young age of 17 years old, Torres made his debut in Liga MX with Guadalajara, under the leadership of Head Coach Jose Luis Real. Now with Chivas USA, Real is not the only familiar face that Torres recognizes. Cubo, along with Chivas Guadalajara's U20 Team, were crowned national champions in the end of May, team of which was lead by current assistant coach Marco Fabian.

"In general, I think the coaching staff is very good. In terms of Real, I'm very thankful for everything that he has taught me in my career, I owe him a lot," Torres commented. "Now I'm here to obey his orders; now I'm here with a new team that he's leading and I feel motivated to respond to his orders and to do things right now that he has given me the confidence to be here."

Even though he has the confidence in the coaching staff, Torres wants to fight for a spot in the starting line-up and from there, help his new team, Chivas USA. Cubo only has one objective in mind: to succeed.

"I'm coming with only one word in mind, succeed, to achieve the goals and do things right. I think that it's going to be a good experience in my career, it's going to help me grow a lot, to mature professionally and on a personal level as well," Cubo finalized.

Purdy and El Salvador go after three golden points

Heading into Monday's match against Haiti in their final match in the opening round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Chivas USA defender Steven Purdy and El Salvador will be in search of a crucial three points to put them into solid position to advance to the following round. La Selecta is currently tied with Trinidad & Tobago with the third-most points in Group B play with one apiece, and should they come away with the win, the worst the Salvadoran side could finish after all other matches are completed would be tied for second, which would then take into consideration tie-breakers.

Sitting in the way of Purdy and El Salvador is a Haiti squad that has recorded three points so far and could clinch an automatic birth in the next stage with a victory. Honduras is the leader in the group, having most recently defeated El Salvador in Miami on a 91st-minute score last Friday to secure their place in the next round with six points tallied up to now. The Catrachos can still have an influence on the other teams in the group, however. Should they come into their match against T & T and look to record their third win, it could open the door for El Salvador to advance with a win, leaving Haiti behind with three points.

Purdy, a native of Northern California and Cal Berkeley product, joined the Rojiblancos this off-season and earned his 15th cap in Friday's loss to Honduras despite not seeing action off the bench. Purdy did, however, play the full match for La Selecta in their opening match against T & T, which resulted in a 2-2 draw with the Soca Warriors at New Jersey's Red Bull Arena. Monday's match will be played at Houston's Bbva Compass Stadium beginning at 4 p.m. (PT).
