Spokane Chiefs News Release

Jared Cowen, the first overall selection in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft, will play Wednesday night in Saskatoon, his third game as a Chief. Cowen, a 15-year-old defenseman from Allan, SK, debuted in a Spokane sweater on December 30th versus Tri-City and played the next night at the Americans. In two games Cowen is +1. Cowen had signed with the Chiefs in December. The 6'5", 207 pound defenseman has two goals, 19 points and 95 penalty minutes with the Saskatoon Contacts. Last season, in 41 regular season games, Cowen scored four goals, 16 points and added 66 penalty minutes. Cowen can only play five regular season games in the WHL before the Saskatoon Contacts season is over.

ONE, TWO, ZERO...For the second time this year and the 13th time in Chiefs history, 11th in the regular season, Spokane played in a 1-0 game when they lost at Brandon on January 19th. It came two weeks after Kevin Armstrong made 23 saves in a 1-0 win against Everett in the Spokane Arena. That game marked the second time in as many years the Chiefs and Silvertips have played a 1-0 game.

KELNER'S DEBUT...Eighteen-year-old Curtis Kelner scored his first goal as a Chief on January 20th at Moose Jaw. The Peoria, AZ native made his debut in a Spokane uniform on January 13th in a 2-1 win over Tri-City. Spokane acquired Kelner from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for 19-year-old defenseman Dan Mercer on Wednesday, January 10th. Kelner is in his second season in the WHL and has appeared in 34 games this year.
